The Vital Life Force
Prashna Upanishad 2.13
Meaning · English
Everything in the threefold heaven is controlled by the life force. Guard us as a mother guards her children, and grant us prosperity and insight.
The bodily powers, namely speech, eye, ear, mind and the others, address the life force, known as prana, as the power that holds all existence under its control, even what is established in the heavens. They recognize that their own functions depend on this power. By asking it to protect them as a mother protects her children, and to grant prosperity (shri) and wisdom (prajna), they close their hymn of praise.
Think of a city's power grid. While the buildings and roads are the structure, nothing happens without the electricity flowing through the wires. The electricity is like prana; it is the invisible current that makes the static physical shell actually function and live.
