Meaning · English
After this the king, once bound to Urvashi, wanted nothing from any world. Free of clinging, he walked this earth, glad in the Self alone.
Three words carry it. Nispriha means without longing: spriha is the reaching of the hand toward something it wants, and here the reaching has stopped. Sanga means clinging, from sanj, to stick to. Muktasanga is the one who is unstuck. Atmarama means one who rests and delights (ramate) in the Self, the atman. Krishna is finishing the story of Pururavas, which he tells Uddhava in the king's own voice. The king had spent years lost in longing for Urvashi. When he came to himself, he spoke bitterly about the body. Those words were disgust at his own craving in that moment. They were not a verdict on women. Now Krishna says where it ended. The king wanted nothing from any world, not even the celestial one where Urvashi lived. He was unstuck. He walked the earth with no goal pulling him, content in the Self. This answers a question the story raises: does seeing through craving leave a man empty? Krishna says it leaves him full, because his joy no longer rests on a person or a place. The commentators read the wandering as the ease of someone with nothing left to hold. Uddhava is asked to see that the way out of obsession is a settled contentment, not a harder grip.
A man has hauled a heavy rope for hours, his fingers locked around it. When the rope is finally let go, the hand opens slowly and hangs loose. Pururavas's clinging was the closed fist. His contentment in the Self is the open hand that now swings freely as he walks.
1. Choose one thing you reach for out of habit, such as a phone, a message, or a snack. Pick a time today when you would normally reach for it. 2. When the urge comes, wait two minutes before reaching. Sit still, hands open on your knees. 3. Notice where in the body the pull sits, and how it changes as you wait. 4. Afterward, walk for ten minutes with nothing in your hands and nothing to check.
It is two in the morning. A man sits at his kitchen table with a betting app open and his savings gone. His phone is at three percent, and part of him is already planning the next stake. Krishna's account of Pururavas suggests a different ending to that night. First comes the clear look: the man sees what the craving has cost him, as the king did, and the harshness he feels toward himself is disgust at the craving, not at his own worth. Then comes loosening. He puts the phone on the charger across the room and lets the pull rise and fall without obeying it. Then comes the question the verse answers: what is left when the wanting quiets? Krishna says the king walked on, content in the Self. For the man, that might be an ordinary morning walk with nothing to chase. Ordinary experience confirms that a craving, left unfed for a little while, often loses its first sharpness. The verse does not promise that the debt, the grief, or the habit will vanish. Where an obsession has taken hold of a life, a doctor or counsellor is part of the way out.
