Meaning · English
Food is the life of living beings. I am the refuge of those in pain. Right living is a person's wealth when they leave this world. The saints are the shelter of those who fear the fall. The saints give eyes; the sun, once risen, shows only what is outside. The saints are the gods, the saints are family, the saints are the Self, and the saints are I myself.
Krishna lists what holds a creature up, then keeps placing the saints beside each item. Three words help. Sant means a good person, from the root as, to be: one who really is, steady and not pretending. Chakshus is the eye, the power to see. Arvak, here, is the lower side, the downward slip; those who fear it are afraid of falling. Now the clauses. Food is the life of living beings, because without it they do not last. Krishna names himself the refuge of the afflicted, the one they run to in pain. Right living is a person's wealth after death, the one purse that travels. For those afraid of falling, the saints are shelter. The saints give eyes, since the risen sun lights only what lies outside. The commentators read these eyes as knowledge that sees the way, what to follow and what to leave. Then the saints are the gods, the kin, the Self, and Krishna himself. Why it is said here: Pururavas has just woken from long craving and needs something to stand on. Krishna's answer is neither a place nor a rite but people. The text asks the listener to count the company of such people as plainly necessary as food and shelter.
A caver enters a tunnel with a guide wearing a headlamp. Daylight stops at the mouth, and the guide's small light shows the turns, the drops and the way out. The sun is the outer light that shows the world; the saint is the lamp that shows where you are standing inside.
1. Tonight, think of one person you know who is calm and wants nothing from you. Write their name down. 2. This week, spend twenty minutes with them, in person or on the phone. 3. Tell them one thing your mind keeps circling back to. Say it plainly and listen to how it sounds aloud. 4. Afterward, notice whether the thing looks smaller, clearer or the same. Do not decide anything yet.
It is two in the morning. A man sits on the edge of his bed, thumb over a betting app, his wife asleep behind him. He has been telling himself for two years that the next win will end it. From inside the habit, every argument for staying sounds sensible. Ordinary experience confirms this: a person cannot easily see the shape of their own craving while they are in it. The verse offers him a different kind of help from more willpower. Krishna says the saints give eyes. So the first step is to be seen by someone steady: he tells an old friend who does not gamble, what he has lost, and how the nights go. Said aloud to a calm listener, the story loses its excuses. The friend can name what the man cannot, and can sit with him the next night. The verse does not promise the craving will leave, or undo the losses. Where a habit has taken hold this deeply, a doctor or counsellor belongs in the circle too.
