Meaning · English

As one who takes shelter near the fire is rid of cold, fear and darkness, so one who keeps company with saints is rid of them. For those who sink and rise again in the dreadful ocean of becoming, the saints, knowers of Brahman and at peace, are the final refuge, as a firm boat is for those in the water.

Krishna gives two pictures of what a saint is for. Take the words first. Sadhu is a saint, from a root meaning to accomplish: one who has reached the goal. Brahmavid is a knower of Brahman, the one reality the text names beyond all passing things. Shanta is peaceful, one whose inner storm has settled. Bhavabdhi is the ocean of becoming, the round of birth and death. Now the clauses. Someone who sits by a fire loses cold, fear and darkness together, because warmth and light come with the fire. In the same way, Krishna says, one who keeps the company of saints loses these three. The second picture is of people in a terrible ocean, going under and coming up again. For them the peaceful knowers of Brahman are the last place to turn, like a strong boat for those in water. Sridhara Svami reads the cold, fear and darkness as the troubles that attach to worldly life, with ignorance as the darkness. The teaching comes at the end of Krishna's account of Pururavas, who sank in craving until he surfaced. Krishna answers the question of what to hold when one's own strength is not enough. The answer is a person who has already crossed. The verse asks the listener to go near such people and stay near them.

On a winter night a stranded traveller sees a roadside fire, walks toward it, and stops shivering before he has said a word. The fire is the saint, and warmth, light and courage reach whoever comes close enough to sit beside it.

1. Think of one person you know who is steady and kind when things go wrong. 2. This week, spend twenty unhurried minutes with them, in person or on a call, with your phone put away. 3. Ask how they got through a hard time, then listen without advising. 4. Afterwards, note in one line what in you eased.

Rohan, forty, sits in his parked car outside a betting shop for the third night this week, engine off, telling himself it is just one more look at the scores. His phone rings. It is an old friend, Meera, who got through her own bad years and never lectures. He almost lets it ring. Here is what the verse would change, step by step. He answers. He says where he is. He hears a voice that is calm and not shocked, which is the warmth the verse speaks of. Her calm makes his fear smaller, and he can see the shop door for what it is. He agrees to meet her tomorrow instead of going in. Ordinary experience confirms that people settle near someone settled, and that shame shrinks when told to one safe listener. The verse does not promise that the craving ends that night, or that company replaces proper help. Where an obsession has become an addiction, a doctor or counsellor is needed beside the friend.
