Krishna in the Kaurava Court
Mahabharata, Udyoga Parva 125
The story · English
Vaisampayana told the story of how Bhishma spoke to the vindictive Duryodhana after Krishna had proposed peace. Bhishma warned him not to let wrath guide his actions and to follow the counsels of the high-souled Krishna. He told Duryodhana that if he ignored these words, he would never find prosperity or happiness. Bhishma urged him to accept what was consistent with virtue and profit rather than exterminating the population of the earth. He warned that through his own wickedness and arrogance, Duryodhana would destroy the prosperity of the Bharatas during the lifetime of Dhritarashtra. He cautioned that by transgressing the words of Krishna, his father, and the wise Vidura, Duryodhana would cost his sons, brothers, and kinsmen their lives.
Bhishma pleaded with Duryodhana to avoid the path of unrighteousness and not to sink his father and mother into an ocean of grief. Once Bhishma finished, Drona spoke to Duryodhana, who was breathing heavily with rage. Drona agreed that the words of Krishna and Bhishma were fraught with virtue and profit. He pointed out that both men were wise, disciplined, and possessed of great learning. Drona urged the monarch to act according to their advice and warned him not to disregard Madhava due to a delusion of understanding. He told Duryodhana that the people who were currently encouraging his aggression would be unable to give him victory and would instead leave others to bear the burden of hostility during the battle.
Drona continued his warning, telling Duryodhana not to slaughter his own brothers and sons or the people of the earth. He explained that any army containing Vasudeva and Arjuna is invincible. Drona noted that Arjuna was even more formidable than Jamadagni's son, Parashurama, had described him to be, and that Krishna, the son of Devaki, could not be resisted even by the gods. After stating that everything conducive to happiness and good had been said, Drona told Duryodhana to do as he wished, as he did not wish to say anything more. Then Vidura, also called Kshattri, looked at the vindictive son of Dhritarashtra. He told him that while he did not grieve for Duryodhana, he grieved deeply for the old couple, Gandhari and Dhritarashtra.
Vidura lamented that because Duryodhana was a wicked son and an exterminator of his own race, his parents would be left without a protector. He imagined Gandhari and Dhritarashtra wandering the earth in sorrow, subsisting on alms like a pair of birds shorn of their wings. Following this, King Dhritarashtra addressed his son in front of the other kings and brothers. He urged Duryodhana to listen to the high-souled Sauri and accept his words, which were eternal and beneficial. Dhritarashtra believed that with the help of the faultless Krishna, they could achieve all their cherished objects. He told his son to use the agency of Vasudeva to bind himself closely to the Pandavas and reconcile with Yudhishthira.
Dhritarashtra warned that the time for peace had come and the opportunity should not pass, for if Duryodhana disregarded Krishna's solicitation, victory would never be his. Hearing this, Bhishma and Drona, who sympathized with the old king, spoke to the disobedient Duryodhana once more. They reminded him that the war had not yet begun. The two Krishnas were not yet in armor, and the bow Gandiva remained inactive. Dhaumya had not yet poured libations on the war-fire to consume the enemy, and Yudhishthira, known for his modesty, had not yet cast angry glances at the Kaurava troops. They urged him to let the hostility cease.
They described the horrors that would follow if peace were not made. They warned of Bhimasena stalking the field with his mace, making the heads of warriors roll like ripening palmyra fruits. They spoke of Nakula, Sahadeva, Dhrishtadyumna, Virata, Sikhandin, and Sisupala's son penetrating the ranks like crocodiles in the deep. They painted a picture of iron shafts piercing the chests of kings who were currently adorned with gems and fragrant unguents. Instead, they begged Duryodhana to embrace Yudhishthira and be patted on the back by him. They envisioned a world where Duryodhana could affectionately converse with Arjuna and the twins, ending the fever of jealousy and ruling the earth with brotherly affection.
