Seeing the whole world as one self, made of nature and the person, let him neither praise nor blame the natures and the doings of others. Whoever praises or blames what others are and what they do quickly falls away from his own true good, because he clings to what is not real.
Krishna uses a few words that carry the whole teaching. Svabhava is a being's own nature, what it is by birth and habit. Karma is action, from kri, to do. Together they mean what a person is and what that person does. Prakriti is nature, the material world, and purusha is the person who dwells in it and sees. Svartha is one's own aim, one's real good. Abhinivesha is settling into something and holding on, here holding on to what is not real. Krishna tells Uddhava to look at the world as one self, made of nature and the person, and from that sight to let go of praising and blaming. The second half gives the reason. Whoever keeps sorting others into admirable and contemptible is treating the many separate figures as solid. That clinging pulls him quickly away from his own real good. The commentators read the loss as a loss of one's own steady aim, not of reputation. The teaching follows from what Krishna has just been saying about the dream: if the many things are like a dream, then rating them is rating a dream. It asks Uddhava to stop handing out verdicts on other people.
A man chopping vegetables slips and cuts his left thumb. His right hand does not scold the left for being clumsy, and the left does not praise the right for holding the knife. Both belong to one body. Krishna asks for that same ease toward people, because they belong to one self.
1. Choose one ordinary hour today, such as a meal or a commute, and keep count of every judgement you make about another person, whether good or bad. 2. When you catch one, say nothing aloud and let it pass without agreeing or arguing with it. 3. Before bed, note which judgements were about something you actually needed to act on and which were only habit. 4. Repeat for three days and see how the count changes.
A grandmother stands in her son's kitchen, watching her daughter-in-law salt the dal differently than she would. The remark is already forming: too little, too late, not how it is done. She feels the small heat of being right. According to Krishna, she can see the cook as one more form of the same self she is, and leave the remark unsaid. She tastes the dal and eats it. The afternoon stays quiet, and her attention goes back to her own hands and her own day. Krishna's claim is that the habit of scoring others is a loss to the one who scores. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a mind busy rating other people has little attention left for its own work. The verse does not promise that the dal will be good, that the daughter-in-law will change, or that the old woman will never feel irritation again. It also does not ask anyone to ignore real harm where a child's safety or health is at stake.
