When the one living in the body sleeps, his awareness is lost, and in the dream he meets illusions, even his own death. So it is with a person who sees many separate things. What is good, what is bad, and how much of it is there, in a duality that is not a real thing? What speech utters is untrue, and so is what the mind holds in thought.

Krishna gives Uddhava a comparison to test against his own nights. A sleeper in the body loses awareness and, in the dream, meets strange sights and may even die. Krishna says the person who sees many separate things (nanartha-drik, one who looks at a world of many purposes and objects) is in the same case. He has lost track of the one self and is walking through appearances. Maya is the word for this: what shows itself while hiding what it rests on. Dvaita, duality, is the split of everything into pairs, such as this and that, mine and yours, good and bad. Krishna asks what good and bad can amount to inside a duality that has no solid being (avastu). He adds that whatever speech says is anrita, not true, and so is whatever the mind dwells on. The words and thoughts are real events. What they claim, a fixed world of separate and opposed things, is what Krishna calls untrue. The question this answers is why Uddhava should not cling to praise or blame, which the earlier verses warned against. Krishna's reason is that the sorting itself belongs to the dream. The verse asks Uddhava to take the sorting lightly, as one holds a dream after waking.

A film in a dark hall has a hero, a villain, a chase, a death, and the audience weeps and gasps. Then the lights come on and there is only a white screen with light that was playing on it. Good and bad, as Krishna describes them, are the figures. The one self is the screen.

1. Tonight before sleep, recall a dream or a worry from this week. Notice how fully real it felt while it lasted. 2. Tomorrow, for ten minutes at a time, notice each time you silently call something good or bad. Keep a tally on your fingers. 3. For each one, ask only: is this a fact, or a label I added? Do not argue with it. Just see it as a label. 4. Before you speak a judgment aloud today, pause for one breath.

A woman wakes at four in the morning with her heart pounding. In the dream she failed an exam and everyone watched. For a few seconds the shame is complete. Then she sees the ceiling fan, hears her husband breathing, and the whole scene drains away. Krishna's teaching asks what that moment shows: the dream felt entirely real while it lasted, and the proof it was not real came only on waking. Ordinary experience confirms that part. The verse then says waking life has the same structure for one who sees many separate things, where good and bad, spoken and thought, are held as solid. For her, that means the day's labels can be held more loosely than the dream's shame was gripped. The verse does not say her worries are made-up, and it does not remove real exams, illness or loss. Someone whose nights are broken by dread or panic should still see a doctor. It speaks only of how firmly the mind holds its own sorting.
