Shadows That Still Frighten

A shadow, an echo, a mere appearance has no reality of its own, yet it still does its work. So the body and all that goes with it, though unreal, bring fear right up to the moment of death. The Self alone is this whole universe. As lord, it sends forth, and it is what is sent forth. It protects, and it is what is protected. As the Self of all, it takes away, and it is what is taken away.

Three small words open the verse: chaya, a shadow; pratyahvaya, an echo, literally a calling back; abhasa, a mere shining-like, an appearance with nothing behind it. Krishna says all three are not real in themselves, yet they act. A shadow can make a child cry. An echo can make a man turn around. In the same way, Krishna teaches, the body and everything attached to it are appearances, and they still bring fear, all the way to death. This answers a question the earlier verses leave open: if the world of many things is a dream, why does it hurt? Because a dream thing still frightens while the dream lasts. Then Krishna names what stands behind the appearances: atman, the Self, from the root for breath or inmost being. The Self alone is the universe. It sends forth, protects and takes back, and it is also what is sent, protected and taken. He calls it vishvatma, the Self of all, so no second maker stands outside the made. The commentators read this as one reality appearing in these three acts, not three powers. Krishna gives Uddhava the reason for fear and the ground beneath it together.

A coat hangs on a bedroom door. In the dark it becomes a stranger standing there, and the heart pounds. The fear is real. The stranger is not. Light on the coat ends it. The body and its threats are the stranger in the dark, and the Self is the plain cloth that was there all along.

1. Tonight, when a worry comes, name its shape in one line, such as "I picture being alone." 2. Ask once: "Is this happening now, or is it a picture I am looking at?" Wait for a few breaths. 3. Write down one thing that is actually in front of you, such as a cup, a voice, a door. 4. Do this once a day for a week, and notice whether the fear loosens when it is called a picture.

A man lies awake the night before he collects a scan result. In the dark he sees the doctor's face, the long corridor, the empty chair at his table. His chest is tight, his sleep is gone, and nothing has been said yet. Krishna's teaching names this: the shadow acts though it is not the thing. Step by step, it would change the night like this. First, he notices the pictures are made inside him and are not the result. Second, he sees that the fear is real as fear even while the pictures are only pictures. Third, he can say the Self is what watches all of it, and the text offers that as steadiness, not as a trick. Ordinary experience agrees that fears grow larger at night and shrink in daylight. The verse does not promise a good result, and it does not take away grief or illness. It is no substitute for asking the doctor plainly and following the treatment.
