Therefore no state of being is found to be other than the Self. When this is looked into, the threefold appearance shines in the Self with no root of its own. Know it to be made of the gunas, threefold, made by maya.

Krishna is closing an argument for Uddhava. He has just said that the body, the dream and the fear of death are shadows that still act on us. Now he draws the conclusion: when he looks for anything that stands apart from the Self, he finds nothing. Three words carry it. Bhava means a state or thing that has come to be, from bhu, to become. Nirmula means rootless, nir plus mula, without a root. Guna means a strand, one of the three threads nature is woven from. Maya is the power that makes, from ma, to measure out. Krishna says the threefold world shows up in the Self like a plant with no soil under it. It appears, and it is not nothing. It simply has no ground of its own. Then he tells Uddhava what to know: it is made of the three gunas, and maya made it. The reason for saying so is Uddhava's grief at being left behind. If nothing exists apart from the Self, then nothing can truly be taken from Uddhava, not even Krishna's company. The teaching asks him to look into the appearance, not merely believe it. The commentators generally read the threefold as the world seen through the strands of nature, and Krishna calls it made, not false.

Hold a garden hose to the sun and a rainbow hangs in the spray. You can see its bands clearly, yet there is nothing to pick up, and it stands on nothing. Only light and water are there. The world appears the same way: vivid, patterned, and resting on the Self alone.

1. Choose one worry that is loud today. Sit with it for five minutes in a quiet corner. 2. Ask where it actually stands. Is it a fact in front of you, or a picture your mind is building with the strands of hope and fear? 3. Notice what in you is watching the picture. Rest your attention there for a minute. 4. Then go on with your work and see whether the worry holds as tightly.

A woman sits up at three in the morning, rereading a curt message from her sister. By the third reading there is a whole story: the insult, the old grudge, the family splitting. Krishna's teaching, as the text gives it, asks her to look for the root. She can check what is actually in front of her: eleven plain words on a screen. The rest, the tone, the motive, the future quarrel, is built inside her and shows up in her awareness, rooted in nothing she can point to. Noticing this slows things down. She can put the phone down and answer in daylight, when the same words often read differently, as ordinary experience confirms. What the verse does not promise is that the hurt vanishes, or that her sister was not unkind. Real quarrels need real conversations. And for sleeplessness or anxiety that keeps returning, a doctor is the right person to ask. The text's own claim goes further than this small exercise: that nothing exists apart from the Self. This scene only shows the first step, looking for the root of an appearance.
