Meaning · English
One who knows this teaching of mine, its knowledge and its realization, neither blames nor praises. He moves through the world like the sun. Having understood by direct perception, by inference, by scripture, and by the self's own knowing that whatever has a beginning and an end is not lasting, he should go about this world without attachment.
Four words carry it. Jnana is knowing the teaching, and vijnana is that knowing made one's own, tasted and not only heard. Krishna calls the pair a skill, the knower's craft. Asat is not-sat: sat is what abides, so asat is whatever has a beginning and an end. It does not mean nothing at all. Nihsanga is being without sanga, the sticking together of mind and thing, like a sleeve caught on a thorn. Krishna tells Uddhava that someone who has taken in this teaching neither condemns nor praises the people and things around him. He crosses the world as the sun crosses the sky. It lights the palace and the gutter alike and is stained by neither. The second half says how such a person arrives there. He does not borrow the conclusion. He checks it by what he sees, by reasoning, by the scriptures, and by his own experience of the self. He finds that what begins and ends does not abide, and so he walks through it unattached. This is taught now because Uddhava is about to lose his dearest friend, and Krishna has just said that fear comes from taking the body and its surroundings for the self. Blame and praise are both ways of clinging, since each says that this matters to me. The teaching asks that it be tested four ways, not simply believed.
The sun comes up over a market lane and lights the sweet shop and the open drain with the same warmth. It goes over every roof and takes nothing home from any of them. The knower's regard falls on everyone evenly, giving light and gathering no stain.
1. Today, when you notice yourself about to criticise or praise someone, pause for one breath before speaking. Notice what you wanted from saying it. 2. Choose one thing you are attached to. Spend two minutes recalling when it came into your life and how it will one day end. 3. In the evening, write one line on whether that matched what you saw, what you reasoned, and what you have read.
A schoolteacher stands in the corridor on results day. One parent thanks her warmly and says she is the best in the school. Another, red in the face, says she has ruined his son's year. By the time she reaches the staffroom she is either glowing or shaking, and her hands are not steady either way. The teaching would change this by slow steps. She would first notice that both remarks landed in the same place, as a verdict on her. Then she would ask what in each remark is plainly information: a boy needs more help in one subject, and a family is grateful. Then she would let the rest pass without carrying it into the next class. Praise and blame would be weighed, not worn. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: words sting and flatter most when we have tied them to our worth. The teaching does not promise she will feel nothing, that the father's grief is unreal, or that she can skip a talk with her head of school where one is needed. It describes a way of walking, not a numbness.
