Whose Bondage, Then?

Bhagavata Purana 11.28.10

Meaning · English

Uddhava asks: Bondage belongs neither to the Self nor to the body, nor to the seer nor to the seen. Lord, for those who are not the Self and who do not see it, whose is it found to be? The Self does not decay. It has no qualities, it is pure, it shines by its own light and is never covered. The body, like fire or like wood, knows nothing. So in this world, whose is bondage?

Uddhava is stuck on a puzzle, and he states it as exactly as he can. Three words carry it. Samsriti is bondage, the round of birth and death; it comes from sam and sri, to flow or move along together. Atman is the Self. Acit means not-knowing, insentient, without awareness. Uddhava runs through the candidates for who is bound. The Self cannot be, he says, because it does not decay, has no qualities, is pure, shines by its own light and is never veiled. Nothing can cling to such a thing. The body cannot be, because it is acit. It is inert, like wood or like fire, and what knows nothing cannot suffer or be trapped. The seer and the seen are ruled out in the same way. That leaves nobody. Yet Krishna has just taught that people are bound, and Uddhava wants to know whose bondage it is. He is not doubting the teaching. He asks because he has followed it honestly to its edge and found a gap. The commentators treat this as a real question that Krishna goes on to answer. It asks the listener to notice that the question has no easy answer, and to wait for Krishna's reply.

A torch throws a beam across a dark room, and someone passes a knotted rope through it. The rope twists and tangles, but the beam is never knotted. The Self is the beam, the body is the rope, and the puzzle is where the knot actually sits.

1. Tonight, when a worry starts to circle, stop for one minute and ask quietly: who exactly is troubled here? 2. Notice what is actually present: a body in a chair, a breath, a thought repeating itself. 3. Say to yourself, 'The body is resting; the thought is the one running.' Look at that for a moment. 4. Do not hunt for an answer. Just let the question stand and see how the worry sits beside it.

A retired schoolteacher lies awake at three in the morning, replaying a remark she made at a family wedding years ago. Her body is warm and still, and the room is quiet. Only the replay is loud. The question the text asks would let her see this plainly. First, the bed, the blanket and the lungs are all fine; nothing in the body is hurt. Second, the remark is over; only a memory of it is running. Third, she can ask who is being troubled, and notice that she cannot easily point to a place where the trouble sits. The text teaches that the Self is untouched and the body is inert, so the knot must be somewhere else, and Krishna goes on to say where. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind can race while the body lies perfectly still. The question does not stop the replay, does not erase the embarrassment, and does not replace sleep, a doctor, or a kind word from someone who loves her if the nights keep coming.
