As long as the self stays joined to body, senses and breath, the round of birth and death goes on bearing fruit for the one who does not discern, though it serves no real purpose. Even when the object is not truly there, the wandering does not stop for one who keeps brooding on sense objects, just as in a dream harm arrives that was never there.

Krishna is answering a hard question from Uddhava: if the self is untouched, why does bondage seem so real? Three words carry the answer. Samsara is the round of birth and death, from sam and sri, to flow on, to keep wandering. Aviveka is lack of discernment; viveka comes from a root meaning to separate, so the undiscerning person is one who cannot tell self from body, senses and breath. Anartha is harm, literally what has no real purpose. Krishna says the round bears fruit, meaning it keeps producing pain and pleasure, only while the self is felt as joined to body, senses and breath. For the one who cannot separate them, that joining feels total. Then he adds that the object behind the suffering need not even be real. The wandering goes on because the mind keeps brooding on sense objects, the way a sleeper keeps meeting trouble that is not there. The comparison explains why the question was asked at all. Bondage seems to be happening, so it seems to need a cause. Krishna says the cause is the brooding and the mistaken joining, not a solid thing outside. The commentators read the verse as describing the cure as well: harm lasts as long as the mistaken joining lasts. It asks the listener to notice how much of the suffering comes from brooding.

A child wakes from a nightmare of being chased, heart pounding, sheets soaked in sweat. The fear was felt in the body, yet no one was ever in the room. The undiscerning person is the sleeper, and the brooding mind is the dream that produces the chaser.

1. Tonight, when a worry returns as you lie down, stay with it for one minute and ask: what is actually in the room right now? 2. Name the part that is only a replay or a forecast in your head, and let that part be called a dream-thought. 3. Notice what the body is doing, such as a tight jaw or fast breath, and then take three slow breaths. 4. Tomorrow, write down one worry from last night and see whether the thing you feared happened.

A man lies awake at three in the morning, replaying what his brother-in-law said at a wedding that evening. His chest is tight, he rehearses replies, and he is angrier at each pass. The verse speaks to that hour. Krishna says harm keeps arriving for the one who broods on objects, even when the object is not there. In that moment, the brother-in-law is asleep in another house. What is present is the memory, the racing heart and the sentences the mind keeps building. Seeing this changes the moment in steps: first, the man notices that the quarrel is happening only in his head. Then he feels the body's alarm as a real effect of an unreal event. Then he can let the sentence go unfinished and turn to breath or sleep. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind kept busy at night makes small things look large. The verse does not promise that the insult was imagined, that the grievance is baseless, or that the hurt will vanish. If sleeplessness or dread continues for weeks, a doctor is the right person to see.
