Sorrow Belongs to the Ego

Meaning · English
Just as for one who has not woken, sleep brings many a calamity, but for one who has woken it cannot bring delusion, so grief and joy, fear and anger, greed, bewilderment, longing and the like are seen in the ego. Birth and death belong to the ego as well, never to the self.
Krishna closes the teaching with a comparison and a sorting. The comparison is sleep. A man still asleep meets disasters in his dream, and for him they are real. A man who has woken has the same dream behind him, and it cannot confuse him any more. The sorting follows. Krishna lists shoka (grief), harsha (elation), bhaya (fear), krodha (anger), lobha (greed), moha (bewilderment) and spriha (longing). All of these, he says, are seen in ahankara. That word is the ego, from aham, I, and kara, maker: the part of the mind that makes an I out of body and thoughts and says, this is me. Janma and mrityu, birth and death, are placed there too, and not in atman, the self. Why teach this now? Uddhava is about to lose his friend, and sorrow is near. Krishna shows him where sorrow lives: in the I that was made, not in the one who sees. Sridhara Svami reads the waking as knowledge that the dream-world was only the ego's projection. The listener is asked to notice that these seven stirrings are visitors in the ego's house, and that the self watching them is not what they happen to.
A child cries out in the night from a bad dream, and the mother switches on the lamp. The monster turns out to be a coat on a hook. The fear was real while the child slept. In the light, it has no place left to stand. The ego is the dream, and waking is the lamp.
1. Tonight, when a worry or flash of anger comes, stop for one minute and name it silently: this is fear, or this is anger. 2. Ask where it sits: in the 'I' that wants, or in the one noticing it. 3. Tomorrow morning, recall one dream and how real it felt, then let it go. 4. Do not argue with the feeling. Only watch it arrive and leave.
A woman sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while her father is in surgery. Her mind runs ahead: what if, what if. Her hands are cold and her jaw is tight. Krishna's teaching, taken as the text gives it, offers a small step here. She can name what is moving in her: fear, and under it a wish to keep him. Naming it puts a little room between her and the feeling. She notices that the fear is one thing and the one noticing it is another. Ordinary experience bears out the point that a feeling named is often easier to carry than one that floods. The text goes further, and says the self is untouched by birth and death. That is its teaching about who she is, and it is not a claim to be tested here. The limit is plain. The verse does not make the surgery go well, does not take away grief if it comes, and does not stand in for the surgeon, the nurse or a doctor's care for her own sleeplessness.
