Meaning · English
The jiva is the sense of 'I' pinned on body, senses, breath and mind. It is called the inner self, wearing the shape of qualities and actions. It is the thread, and the great one, sung of under many names, and time drives it on through the round of birth and death. It has no root. It appears in many forms and is only the work of mind, speech, breath and body. The sage cuts it with the sword of knowledge, sharpened by worship, and walks the earth with no thirst.
Krishna takes apart one word, jiva, the self that wanders. Its core is abhimana, from abhi and man, to think of as myself. It is the habit of saying 'I' of the body, the senses, the breath and the mind. Krishna tells Uddhava this borrowed 'I' takes on the look of the inner self, and takes its shape from the gunas (the three strands of nature) and from karma (what has been done). He calls it the thread because experiences are strung on it, and the great one because it seems to carry everything. Time (kala) drives it through samsara, the round of birth and death. Then comes the turn. This wanderer has no root. It shows in many forms, but it is only the doing of mind, speech, breath and body. Nothing underneath holds it up. A rootless thing can be cut, and Krishna names the blade: jnana, knowledge, sharpened by upasana, steady worship. Whoever cuts it is atrishna, without thirst, and moves through the world free of craving. This is taught because Uddhava has asked how bondage can be real when the self is not touched by it. Krishna's answer is that the bond is a mistaken 'I', not a chain. He asks Uddhava to see the knot for what it is and to cut it.
A kite flies in a high wind, and a child below thinks the kite is pulling her. But there is only a thin string, and her own hand holding it. The wandering self is the kite: it seems to drag a whole life along, and it hangs on a single thread of 'I am this'.
1. Tonight, before sleep, finish three sentences aloud or on paper: 'I am a ___', using the roles you wore today, such as parent, worker, tired one. 2. Beside each, write who was watching you wear it. 3. Tomorrow, when irritation or worry rises, say quietly, 'the thread is pulling', and wait ten breaths before you answer anyone. 4. Afterward, note what you did not need.
A retired teacher stands at her farewell party holding a bouquet and a card. Everyone says what a teacher she was, and she feels a drop in her chest, as if a coat she wore for thirty years has been taken off and she does not know who is left under it. Krishna's teaching names that moment exactly. The 'I' she felt shrinking was made of role, body, habit and mood, and it had no root of its own. Seen that way, the drop in her chest can be watched instead of obeyed. She can let the roles be roles, thank the guests, and ask what in her was already there before the title. The verse does not promise that the ache will vanish, or that missing the classroom is a mistake. It does not replace friends, family or a doctor if the low mood lingers. Ordinary experience does show that people cling hardest to a self-image when it is about to change.
