Knowledge, discernment, scripture, austerity, direct seeing, tradition and inference all point the same way. What alone stands at the beginning and the end of a thing, as its time and its cause, is the same thing standing in the middle. Gold worked into shape is gold before it is shaped and gold after it is melted, and in every golden thing between. Used under many names, it is still gold. I am like that for this world.

Krishna begins with a list of the ways people come to know anything: jnana, learning; viveka, the sorting of one thing from another; nigama, the scriptures; tapas, austere discipline; pratyaksha, what the eyes show; aitihya, what tradition hands down; and anumana, reasoning from signs. He says all of these lead to one finding. Whatever is there at the start of a thing and still there at its end, as its cause and its time, is what the thing truly is while it lasts. The middle is only that same stuff, carrying a name. Then he gives the gold. A goldsmith's raw gold comes first. After the bangle breaks, gold remains. In between, people call it ring, chain or anklet, and use each by its name and its work. The name changes. The gold does not. Krishna ends by saying he is that for the world: the ground the many named things stand on. The commentators take the gold as the cause that stays present in every effect. He teaches this to Uddhava to answer a worry: if the seen world is like a dream, what is solid? The answer is that the world is not nothing. Its changing shapes rest on one thing that does not change. What it asks of the listener is to look through the name to the substance.

A lump of dough becomes a flat roti, a puffed puri and a layered paratha. Each has its own name, shape and use at the table, yet all through the cooking it is the same flour and water. The dough stands for what Krishna says he is, and the breads for the many named things.

1. Tonight, when you eat, pick one dish and name its single source, such as wheat in the bread or milk in the sweet. 2. Today, hold one object with a name, like a spoon or a bangle, and say quietly what it is made of before its name came. 3. For two minutes this week, look at three different faces and name what each had in common at the start: a birth, a breath.

A woman takes her late mother's bangles to a jeweller to have them melted into a ring for her daughter. She feels she is destroying something. The jeweller weighs them, heats them, and pours out a small bright bead. Here the verse speaks to her. Step by step: the bangles had a name and a history, and the history is real. The weight on the scale is the same weight that sat on her mother's wrist. When the ring is finished, nothing has been lost from the gold. Krishna teaches that the world's many things rest on him in the same way, as the one thing that stays through every shape and name. Ordinary experience bears out the small part of this: things change form while what they are made of carries on. The verse does not say the shape was worth nothing. It does not take away the sadness of seeing the bangles go, and it says nothing about what the jeweller should charge.
