Krishna says: this knowing is of three states, of the three strands of nature, and of cause, effect and doer. Whatever is present in all of them, and still stands apart from them, is the fourth, and that alone is true. What was not there before, is not there after, and in the middle is only a name, is not real. Whatever is made and shown by another is that other itself. This is my settled view.
Krishna begins with the three states of a mind: waking, dream and deep sleep. Each comes with the three gunas, the strands of nature, which are like three threads twisted into one rope. Each also comes with its own cause, its own effect and its own doer. Then he names the fourth, turya, from the word for four. It is what is present in all three (samanvaya, going along with) and yet stays apart from each (vyatireka, standing clear). Krishna says that alone is true. It is the one thing that does not come and go as the states change. The second half gives a test. Whatever has no existence before it appears, none after it ends, and in the middle is only a name, is not real in the full sense. This is what Krishna means by calling the world unreal: it does not last, though it is seen. And whatever is made and shown by something else is that something else. A thing borrows its being from its source. The question behind it is what can be relied on when everything shifts. Krishna answers that the one who knows all three states is the steady thing. The commentators generally read the fourth as the self, the awareness that stays. The teaching asks the listener to look for what remains when each state ends.
A film plays on a cloth screen in a village square: a storm, a wedding, a fire. Each scene arrives and leaves. The screen was there before the first frame and is there after the last. The three states are the scenes, and the fourth is the screen.
1. Tonight, just before sleep, note that you are still awake and that the day is ending. Stay with that for one minute. 2. In the morning, before getting up, recall any dream, even a scrap. Notice that it felt real while it lasted. 3. Ask once: who was aware of the dream, and who is aware now? Do not hunt for an answer. Just notice that the asking comes from somewhere that was present in both.
A woman wakes at dawn with her heart pounding. In her dream she was late for an exam and could not find the room. For a few seconds the fear is still in her body. Then she sees the ceiling and the clock and the dream goes thin. Nothing in the dream was a lie to her while she was in it, and nothing in it is left now. That gap is what the verse points at. Sleep research describes dreaming and deep sleep as different stages of the same night, and each has its own feel. Ordinary experience confirms that the dream felt complete from inside. Yet she can say afterward that she dreamed, and that she slept well or badly. The text teaches that the one who knows all three states is the fourth, and it stays the same across them. Taken step by step, she notices the fear, sees that it came from a scene that is over, and lets her breathing slow. The verse does not promise that her pulse will settle at once. It does not cure repeated nightmares, and a doctor should see anyone whose sleep is regularly broken or frightening.
