What is not truly there still shows up: this restless creation, made of changes. Brahman shines by its own light, and it appears as a picture painted from senses, objects, mind and their changes. Seen clearly through reasons that tell Brahman apart, and through the skilled setting aside of what is added on, a person cuts every doubt about the self and comes to rest, content in their own joy, free of all that is hungry for things.

Krishna uses a few words that carry the whole teaching. Vikara means change, a thing altered from what it was. Svayam-jyotih means self-lit: it shines by its own light and needs no other light to be known. Viveka is discernment, from a root meaning to separate, like picking stones out of rice. Uparameta means to stop and rest, as a traveller does on arriving. Krishna says the world of senses, objects and mind keeps showing up, yet it is only a changing creation. Brahman is the light in which it all appears, and the whole show is like a picture painted on that one surface. The picture is not the surface. Then comes the second half. Reasons that separate Brahman from what is laid over it, together with a skilled setting aside of the added things, make this clear. With that, the doubt about the self is cut. Krishna teaches this because Uddhava has been given a long argument, and an argument can leave a man still wondering. So Krishna finishes with the point of it all, which is rest. After the doubt is gone, the mind no longer runs after objects. It is content in its own joy. The commentators agree that the aim is not more thinking but a mind that has nothing left to chase.

A lamp stands in a dark room and shows the table, the chair and the curtains. Nobody needs a second lamp to see the first one. The furniture is Brahman's appearances, always changing in the light. The lamp is Brahman, which shows itself while showing everything else.

1. Tonight, pick one worry that keeps returning. Write it in one line on paper. 2. Under it, write what is actually known and what is only imagined. Take five minutes. 3. Cross out the imagined part and read what is left. 4. Then sit for two minutes with nothing to chase. Notice what is still there once the worry has gone quiet.

A young man lies awake at two in the morning after a job interview. He replays every answer and asks whether he sounded foolish. Each replay brings a new doubt, and each doubt seems more solid than the one before. The teaching would change this moment in steps. First, he sees that the replaying is a changing thing, one thought after another, and that he is the one watching it. Second, he separates what happened from what he has added to it. The answers were given and are finished. The verdict is a guess. Third, with the guess set aside, the doubt has less to hold on to, and he can lie still. Krishna calls this resting, content within, with no hunger pulling outward. Ordinary experience says a doubt turned over at night looks larger than it does at breakfast, and that tiredness makes a thought feel heavier than it is. The limit is plain. Cutting doubt about the self does not tell him whether he gets the job, and it does not remove the disappointment if he does not. A sleeplessness that lasts for weeks is a matter for a doctor.
