The Self is not the body made of earth, nor the senses, nor the gods who rule them, nor breath, water or fire. Mind is only food; so are intellect and thought. Ego, space, earth and the sense-objects are not the Self either.
Krishna goes down the list of what a person takes himself to be, and crosses each item off. Three words carry it. Atma, the Self, comes from a root meaning to breathe or to pervade: what one is at the core. Ahankara is the I-maker, from aham, I, and kara, making: the faculty that stamps the word mine on whatever it touches. Dhishana is the intellect, the part that grasps and decides. Krishna names the body, the five senses and the powers behind them, breath, fire, water, earth and space. He then names mind, intellect, thought and the I-maker. Calling the mind mere food means it is made of the same matter as the body and grows and shrinks with what is taken in. The last word is read two ways by the commentators: the sense-objects, or the balanced state of nature before it unfolds. Either way it is on the list. He teaches this because Uddhava has been told the seen world is like a dream, and a listener will ask what is left once the dream is set aside. The answer begins with subtraction. Whatever can be seen, counted or changed is an instrument or an object. It asks the listener to stop signing his name to any of them.
Someone sits in a rented room with a notebook, listing everything in it: bed, lamp, fan, cupboard, window, even the clothes on his back. The list can run on, but the one holding the pen never appears on it. Krishna's list works the same way: everything counted is a thing owned, and the counter is the Self.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name aloud what you can notice: a hand, a breath, a sound, a mood, a passing thought. 2. After each, say quietly, "this is noticed, not me." 3. When a strong feeling comes tomorrow, such as hunger, irritation or worry, say the same sentence once before acting. 4. Notice whether the pause is a little longer than usual.
A man of sixty-two stands at the bathroom mirror the morning after a hernia operation, looking at a stomach he no longer recognises. He is tired, a little ashamed, and his mind keeps saying he is getting old. Krishna's list changes the moment in steps. First, the body is named as one thing among others, something that heals, tires and ages by its own rules. Second, the mood is named as a passing state of the mind, and ordinary experience agrees that a bad night and a sore wound colour every thought. Third, the one who is watching both is not on the list. Krishna teaches that this watcher is the Self, and that it is not hurt when the body is. The man can then do what is needed: keep the follow-up visit, take the medicine, walk the short distance the surgeon allowed. The verse does not shorten recovery, remove pain or replace the doctor. It does not say the body is unimportant, only that it is not the whole of who he is.
