What good can the steadied senses, made of the gunas, do for one whose home is in Me, secluded and clear? And what stain comes from the scattered ones? What do clouds, gathering and gone, do to the sun? As the sky clings to none of the qualities of air, fire, water and earth, nor to the seasons' qualities that come and go, so the imperishable stays beyond the stains of clarity, restlessness and dullness. These feed rebirth in one who takes them as 'I'.

Three words carry this. Guna is a strand of nature: sattva is clarity, rajas is restlessness, tamas is dullness. Akshara means the imperishable, from a, not, and kshar, to flow away or perish. Ahammati means the mind that takes 'I' to be these things; aham is I, mati is the thought of it. Krishna asks two questions. Does a steady mind add anything to one who lives in him? Does a scattered mind harm that person? Both are answered with the sun: clouds gather and leave, and the sun is neither made nor unmade by them. Then the sky: it holds wind, fire, rain and earth's dust, and the seasons pass through it, yet it clings to none. So the imperishable is beyond the stains of the three gunas. Those stains are what keep rebirth turning, but only for the one who says 'this is me'. Krishna says this to Uddhava to settle a worry: if the mind and senses swing between calm and agitation, has the self been spoiled? His answer is that the swings belong to nature, and the self they pass over is untouched. The text asks Uddhava to stop counting good and bad mental weather as a verdict on who he is.

A film plays on a cinema screen. A house burns, a flood rises, a storm breaks, and afterwards the screen is clean and white. Every scene appeared on it, and none left a mark. The self is like that screen, and the gunas are like the scenes passing over it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and name your present mood as weather: 'restless today' or 'heavy today'. 2. Say it as 'restlessness is passing through', not 'I am restless'. 3. Notice whether anything in you is still watching the mood. Spend a minute with that watcher. 4. Tomorrow, catch one mood early and repeat the steps for a minute.

A woman rides the last bus home after a bad day. Her thoughts race, she replays an argument, and she decides she is simply a short-tempered person. Krishna's teaching changes this moment in steps. First, the racing is named as one of the gunas moving through her, restlessness, and not as her. Second, she can notice that something is aware of the racing, and that this awareness was there before the argument and is there now. Third, the mood is allowed to run its length without being turned into a judgement about her whole life. Ordinary experience agrees that moods rise and fall, and that tiredness and hunger colour them. The old teaching goes further, claiming that what watches is untouched by them. It does not promise the restlessness will stop, that the argument was not real, or that she owes no apology. It is also no substitute for a doctor when low mood or anxiety lasts for weeks.
