Even so, keep away from what maya has built out of the three qualities, for as long as it takes. Let firm devotion to me wipe the dust from the mind, the dye that colours it. A disease treated badly comes back again and again, and each time it grows and torments people. In the same way a mind whose stains and old actions are not yet ripened out pierces the poor yogi, tying him to every attachment.

Three words carry it. Guna means a strand or quality of nature; the text counts three, and the world's appearances are woven from them. Maya is the power that builds that appearance. Kasaya is a dye, the colour that past longing and past action leave in the mind. Bhakti-yoga is devotion practised as a discipline, bhakti from bhaj, to share in. The verse opens with a hinge: even so. Krishna has just said the self is not touched by the qualities. He now says that this knowing does not yet let a person handle them freely. So he asks for distance from the qualities, and sets the length of that distance: until strong devotion to him has wiped the dust from the mind. Then comes a sickness picture. A disease cured badly goes quiet, then returns and grows. A mind with unripe stains does the same. The old colour is still in it, so it pierces the poor yogi, one who has glimpsed the truth but not cleaned himself, through every attachment. The commentators read the poor yogi as someone with real knowledge and unfinished cleansing. It is taught here to answer a likely mistake: if the self is untouched, why be careful? Krishna's reply is that understanding and a cleansed mind are two different things. He asks Uddhava for patience, and for devotion that stays firm.

A gardener snips weeds at ground level and the bed looks clean. A week later they are back, thicker, because the roots were left in. The cut tops are the knowing that the self is untouched. The roots are the old stains in the mind, and they only die when devotion works at them over time.

1. Choose one habit that still pulls at you, such as late-night scrolling or snacking when upset. Today, keep it out of arm's reach: phone in another room, or the packet off the shelf. 2. Each morning for a week, spend five minutes on whatever form of devotion you already have: a name, a verse, a quiet bow. 3. When the pull comes, note the hour and what came just before it. Write one line. Do not argue with it, only record it. 4. At week's end, read the lines and see where the pull returns.

A man has not had a drink in three months. At his cousin's wedding a relative puts a glass in his hand, music is loud, and he is tired. He feels fine, even strong, and that feeling is the danger the verse names. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness and crowds weaken restraint. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, he would not treat three calm months as proof the matter is finished, since a half-treated illness looks cured before it returns. Second, he would keep distance from the thing: set the glass down, stand near people who are not drinking, leave early if needed. Third, he would hold to the steady practice that has carried him, whatever it is for him, because the verse asks for firmness rather than a single burst of effort. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise the pull will vanish that night, and it is no replacement for a doctor or a counsellor where a real dependence is involved. Returning habits are common and are no proof that someone has failed.
