Yogis whose practice goes wrong, blocked by obstacles set by men or sent by the gods, take up yoga again by the strength of what they practised before. They do not go back to the bondage of action. A creature acts, and is made to act, driven by something, until the body falls. The one who knows does not act that way. Though he stands in nature, his craving has turned back, and he rests in the joy of his own self.

Two ideas sit side by side. The first is about interruption. Krishna says a yogi can be stopped by antaraya, obstacles. Some come from other people, some from the gods, as when a family crisis, illness or a run of bad luck breaks the daily practice. Such a person is not finished. The strength of earlier abhyasa, repeated practice, carries him back to yoga, and he does not fall into karma-tantra, the machinery of ordinary action driven by want. The commentators take this half as comfort for someone whose practice has been broken. The second idea is about how people act. An ordinary creature acts, and is also made to act, pushed by some force until the body drops. The knower still lives among nature's workings, in a body that eats, walks and works. The difference is nivritta-trishna, craving turned back: the colour has gone out of wanting. He is held by contentment in his own self, svasukha-anubhuti, the felt joy of the self, so nothing outside has a hook in him. Krishna teaches this just after warning that old tendencies keep returning. The reader may fear that one lapse undoes everything. Krishna answers that earlier effort is not lost. He also shows what the goal looks like: a life of action that is no longer pushed by craving.

A path worn across a field stays visible even after weeks of no one walking it. When someone steps onto it again, the ground already knows the way. Earlier practice is that worn path, and a broken routine has not erased it.

1. Think of one good habit you dropped during a hard patch, such as a walk, a prayer or a quiet ten minutes. 2. Restart it today at a small size, five minutes at a fixed hour, without making up for lost days. 3. Notice how much of it your body remembers: the posture, the pace, the settling. 4. Once this week, watch one action of yours and ask what is pushing it, need or craving.

A woman had walked every morning for months. Then her father fell ill, and for six weeks she stood at the door only to leave for the hospital. Now he is home, and she looks at her shoes feeling that she has lost it all and must start from nothing. The verse tells her the obstacle was real and the stopping was not a failure. The earlier practice still carries her. She puts the shoes on and walks a short round without a reckoning of missed days. Ordinary experience bears this out: a habit practised for months usually comes back more easily than a new one is begun, and guilt over a lapse tends to make the return harder. The second half, about acting with craving turned back, is the text's own teaching about the knower. It is offered as the aim, not as something she should expect after one walk. The limit is plain. The verse does not lift her tiredness or her worry for her father, and it does not replace the doctor's advice on how much exercise he or she should take.
