Narada asked Brahma what Shiva did after he married Girija and returned to his mountain. How was a son born to the Supreme Self, and why did Shiva, who delights only in himself, take a wife at all? How was Taraka killed? Brahma was pleased and thought of Shiva. He said this story was sacred, took away sin and grief, and freed a hearer from every wrong. Shiva came to Kailasa after marrying Parvati and shone with new beauty. He also kept in mind the work of the gods and the suffering of people. When he arrived, his attendants rejoiced, there was a great festival, and the gods went back to their own realms glad. Then Shiva took Girija to a lonely, beautiful place, made a bed fragrant with flowers and sandal paste, and stayed there with her.
They stayed together for a thousand years by the gods' reckoning. At her touch Shiva was overcome, and she, touched by him, did not notice day or night. So long a time passed for them like a single moment. The gods gathered on Mount Meru, with Indra at their head. They said: Shiva married for our sake, yet he is a yogi, free of change, at peace in himself, and no son has been born. We do not know why he delays. Narada soon told them how long the two had been together. Anxious, the gods put Brahma in front and went to Narayana. Brahma told him everything, and the gods stood silent, like painted figures in a picture.
Brahma said: Shiva has been with her a thousand divine years, and a yogi lost in love does not stop. Vishnu answered: Do not worry, all will be well. Take refuge in Shiva. Those who do so have nothing to fear. This pleasure will not be broken before its time, for work done in its proper time succeeds. No one can interrupt Shiva's love. When the thousand years are full he will stop of his own will. He warned them: whoever cuts short a couple's union by a trick will be parted from wife and son in birth after birth, lose knowledge and fame, and go to the hell Kalasutra. Durvasa once did this to Indra and Rambha, and lost his wife. Gautama, who parted Candra from Mohini, lost his own. The guru who halted Ghritachi's love lost his wife Tara, whom Candra took. Hariscandra paid for it too, and was beaten by Visvamitra.
Vishnu told them to go when the thousand years were complete and make Shiva's seed fall to the earth. From that seed a son would be born, named Skanda. So he sent Brahma and the gods home. Then the earth began to shake under the weight of the two at play. She trembled, with the serpent Sesha and the tortoise beneath her. The tortoise's weight pressed on the wind that holds up all things, and the wind stopped. The three worlds were gripped by fear. The gods went with Brahma to Vishnu, and told him: Lord, protect us. The breath of the three worlds is stopped and we do not know why. They stood before him in silence and grief.
Vishnu took them all to Kailasa. They found Shiva's dwelling empty of him and asked the attendants where he was. The attendants answered honestly: Shiva went into Girija's house, and left us here. We do not know what he is doing inside. Many years have passed. Vishnu, Brahma and the gods went to the door. Brahma cried out in a loud, pleading voice, and Vishnu praised Shiva again and again: What are you doing inside, great Lord? Protect us who are tormented by Taraka. Vishnu wept there, and the gods wept with him. A cry of sorrow rose from the dwellers of heaven, mixed with their praise of Shiva.
Hearing them, Shiva, wise in yoga, and without desire, yet did not leave his love, out of fear of Parvati. Still, he came to the door, near the gods. They were glad to see him, and bowed and praised him: Lord, you know everything. Do your work for the gods, and kill Taraka and the other demons. Shiva said: What is to happen happens, and no one can prevent it. What is done is done. Hear what matters now: my seed has slipped, who will take it? He let it fall on the ground. At the gods' urging, Agni became a dove and swallowed all of Shiva's seed with his beak. Meanwhile Girija came, found the gods there, and understood everything. She burned with anger.
She said to the gods: You are wicked, and always serve yourselves at others' cost. You prayed to Shiva for your own ends and spoiled my pleasure, and I have been left childless. No one who crosses me finds happiness. Then she cursed them: from today the wives of the gods will be barren. To Agni she said: Be one who eats everything, always in pain. You do not know Shiva's nature. You were a fool to do the gods' work, and you should not have eaten his seed. She returned home displeased, and Shiva followed. The gods who ate the food Agni had eaten became pregnant, burning with Shiva's seed. They went to his door, bowed with joined hands, and prayed: We are pregnant and burning. Save us. Shiva came and laughed gently: Vomit my seed, all of you, and you will be at ease. They did, and the seed fell, golden, the size of a mountain. The gods were relieved.
Agni was still burning. He begged forgiveness, and Shiva said: You ate my seed, and your burning continues. Now you have come for refuge, so place it in a good woman's womb. Agni answered that no woman could bear it. Narada then advised him: place it in women who bathe at dawn in the month of Magha. Six of the seven sages' wives came to bathe, chilled by the cold. Arundhati forbade them to go near the fire, but Shiva's maya deluded the six and they went. The seed entered them, and Agni's burning ended. The women, pregnant and scorched, were abandoned by their husbands and gave up the seed on the Himalaya. Himalaya, unable to bear it, threw it into the Ganga. She left it among reeds, and a radiant boy was born on the sixth day of the bright half of Margasirsha. Drums sounded in the sky, flowers fell, and the gods were glad.
