The story · English

Brahma told Narada what came next. Just then the mighty Vishvamitra arrived, sent by fate and glad at heart. He saw the wondrous dwelling of Shiva's radiant son and felt every wish fulfilled. He bowed and praised the child, using words the Creator himself had put in his mouth. The boy smiled and spoke: "By Shiva's will, wise one, why have you come? Perform my rites as the Vedas lay them down. From today be my priest, and you will be honored by all, without doubt." Vishvamitra answered, astonished: "Listen, child. I am no brahmin. I am Vishvamitra, a kshatriya, son of Gadhi, who serves brahmins. Now tell me, who are you?" The boy told him his story.

Then the child said to Gadhi's son: "By my boon you will be a brahmin sage, a brahmarshi, without doubt. Vasishtha and the others will praise you with respect. So do my rites at my command. But keep all this secret and tell it nowhere." Vishvamitra performed the whole ceremony, as the Vedas direct. Pleased, the child gave him supreme divine knowledge and made him his priest. From then on the child showed many playful wonders. Brahma went on to another. Shveta, whose other name is Agni, saw this holy son of his own, embraced and kissed him, and called him "son." He gave him a spear. Guha took it, climbed that peak, struck it, and the peak crashed to earth. Ten padma of demons who had come to kill him were destroyed by that blow. A great cry went up, and the mountains and earth shook.

Indra came with the gods and struck the boy's right side with his thunderbolt. A strong man was born from the wound, named Shakha. Indra struck again at the left side, and another mighty man arose, Vishakha. Then Indra struck the heart, and a third was born, Naigameya, equally strong. Now Skanda and these three, four great warriors, rushed to kill Indra, and Indra took shelter in the boy himself. Afraid, Indra and the gods went back to their own world, bewildered, never grasping the truth. The boy stayed where he was, joyful and unafraid, playing as before. Then six women called the Krittikas came there to bathe and saw the radiant child. Each wanted to take him, and they quarreled over it.

To settle their quarrel the child made six faces. He drank the milk of every one of them, and all were satisfied. Understanding his wish, the Krittikas carried him joyfully to their own world. They nursed the child called Kumara, Shiva's son, brighter than the sun, and raised him. They never let him out of their sight, loving him more than their own lives. They gave him garments rare in the three worlds and fine ornaments, and fed him praised and tasty food, day after day. One day the Krittikas' son went to the gods' assembly and showed Vishnu and all the gods his great glory. Seers and gods stared, and asked, "Who are you?" He said nothing. He went home quickly and stayed hidden as before.

Meanwhile, with the boy in the Krittikas' keeping, time passed and Parvati did not notice. Then, smiling, she said to Shambhu: "Great God, I won you by my past merit. You were absorbed in love-play, and the gods broke it off. Your seed fell on the ground, not in my womb. Where did it go? Who hid it? Your seed cannot fail. Was it wasted, or is a child born somewhere?" Shiva laughed, called the gods and sages, and said: "Where has my seed gone, and who hid it? If someone fell and did not own it at once, he deserves punishment." Terrified, they spoke in turn. Vishnu said, "May those who hid it be liars, enemies of their teachers." Brahma, the world guardians, the gods and the gods' wives each spoke a curse on whoever concealed it.

Shiva answered the gods: "No god hid it, yet it was hidden. You are witnesses of all deeds. Tell me what you know." Trembling, they spoke in turn. Brahma said: "Your seed fell to earth, and I knew it could not fail." Earth said she could not bear it and threw it into Fire. Fire said he threw it onto Kailasa. The mountain threw it into the Ganga. The Ganga, distressed, cast it into a thicket of reeds. Vayu said that in the reeds it became a very beautiful boy on the river bank. Surya said he went down to the western mountain at the sight of the crying child. Moon, Water, Dusk, Night and Day told how the Krittikas took him and nursed him, and Shiva rejoiced.

Pleased, Shiva gave much gold to brahmins; Parvati, Lakshmi, Sarasvati, Mena, Savitri, Vishnu and the gods did the same. Then Shiva sent his attendants, Virabhadra, Nandishvara, Mahakala and countless others, to surround the Krittikas' house. The frightened Krittikas told Karttika, blazing with divine power. He said: "Mothers, do not fear while I am here." Nandishvara sat before him and told him the whole story, that Shiva would consecrate him, give him every weapon, and that he would slay Taraka. Karttika replied: "These women are my mothers, and Parvati is my mother by dharma. I will come with you and see the gods." He comforted the Krittikas and set out with Shiva's attendants.
