Brahma said: At that moment Kartikeya saw a chariot like no other, built by Visvakarma. It had a hundred wheels, it was wide and beautiful, and it moved as swiftly as thought. Parvati had sent it, and the best of the attendants stood around it. Kartikeya, wise beyond his years and born of Shiva's own power, climbed in with a heavy heart. Then the Krittikas reached him, their hair loose, wild with grief. They cried, "Ocean of kindness, you are leaving us, and that is cruel. It is no dharma for a son to abandon the mothers who raised him. We brought you up with love, and by right you are our son. What shall we do? Where shall we go?" They clasped him to their breasts and fainted, torn from their child.
The boy woke them with words about the self, the deeper truth beneath parting. Then he climbed back into the chariot with the Krittikas and the attendants, and set out for his father's home. Good omens met him all along the way. Drawn by the swift chariot, he came to Kailasa, to the undying banyan tree, and stayed there with the Krittikas and the foremost attendants, delighted, a master of many playful tricks. The gods, sages, Siddhas and Caranas told Vishnu and Brahma of his arrival. Shiva came gladly with them all. Conches sounded, drums and trumpets rang out, and the gods held a great festival. Virabhadra and the other ganas followed, singing and keeping time, shouting victory and homage to the son of Shiva, born among the reeds.
Parvati had the royal road beautifully adorned, and the whole city was decked with rubies and other jewels. She came with married women whose husbands and sons were living, and with thirty goddesses led by Lakshmi in front. Heavenly Apsarases, Rambha and the rest, smiling in fine dress, sang and danced at Shiva's command. Those who looked at him saw a boy like Shankara, wrapped in a light that filled the three worlds, shining like molten gold, with the brilliance of the sun. All bowed at once, shoulders bent, speaking homage. Then I, Vishnu, Indra and all the gods surrounded him and fell to the ground like fallen staffs. Shambhu and Girija arrived, glad, and saw their son. Kartikeya stepped quickly down from the chariot and bowed his head to them.
Shiva held him close, kissed the crown of his head, and breathed in his scent with love. Parvati, flustered with joy, embraced Guha and nursed him, her milk flowing. The gods and their wives waved lamps before him, shouts of victory filled the sky, sages chanted, singers sang, and many played instruments. Mahesha took the shining boy on his lap and glowed, the best of fathers. Kartikeya laughed and played there, and squeezed the serpent Vasuki around Shiva's neck with both hands. Shiva laughed and pointed it out to Girija, so moved that he could say nothing. Then Shiva seated Kartikeya on a jeweled throne and bathed him with hundreds of jeweled jars of water from every holy place, made sacred with Vedic mantras.
Then came the gifts. Vishnu gave a discus, his own garland, the Vaijayanti, and a crown, diadem and armlets. Shiva gave a trident, the Pinaka bow, an axe, a spear, the Pasupata, arrows, the weapon of destruction, and a supreme knowledge. I gave a sacred thread, the Vedas, the Gayatri, a water pot, the Brahma weapon, and a knowledge that crushes enemies. Indra gave the king of elephants and his thunderbolt. Varuna gave a white parasol and a necklace of gems. Surya gave a swift chariot and armor. Yama gave his staff, the moon a jar of nectar, Agni a great spear, Nirriti his weapon, Vayu his wind weapon, Kubera a mace. Kamadeva gave a weapon of desire, the ocean of milk jewels and anklets, Himalaya ornaments and cloth. Garuda gave his son Citrabarhana the peacock, Aruna the cock Tamracuda. Parvati gave supreme lordship and long life. Lakshmi gave wealth, Savitri every perfected knowledge. Shiva then said, "I am pleased. Ask for any boon." The gods answered, "Kartikeya will kill Taraka. Command him." Shiva agreed, and they set out with Guha in front.
Visvakarma built a splendid city near the mountain, with a throne for Guha. Vishnu had Kartikeya anointed with water from all holy places, crowned him lord of the universe, and praised him. Then a brahmin named Narada came. "My lord, my sacrifice of a goat is ruined. The goat broke its rope and ran. Save me." Kartikeya sent his attendant Virabahu, who searched everywhere and found the goat at Vaikuntha, brought it back by the horns, bleating. Kartikeya rode it round the whole universe in a moment and returned. Narada begged for the goat. Kartikeya said, "A goat is not fit to be killed. Go home. Your sacrifice is complete, by my grace." Glad, the brahmin went home, blessed.
