Brahma spoke to Narada. The gods, Indra and Hari among them, had watched the deeds of the Lord, and their hearts were glad and steady in their trust. Filled with Shiva's brilliance, they leapt and roared, put the boy Kumara at their head, and came out to kill Taraka. Taraka, the mighty, heard of it and at once marched against them with a great army. The gods saw him coming and made lion-roars, amazed at their own strength. Then a voice from the sky, sent by Shankara, spoke to Hari and all the gods: "You have risen with Kumara before you. Conquer the daityas in battle, and you will be victorious." Hearing it, the gods lost their fear and shouted the cries of heroes.
With Kumara in front they went to the place where the river meets the sea. Taraka came quickly there, surrounded by his great army and many allies. War drums boomed like clouds at the end of the world, and harsh horns sounded. The daityas roared and shook the earth with their stamping. The gods heard that terrible noise without fear and rose together, eager to fight. Indra set Kumara on an elephant and went ahead, guarded by the guardians of the quarters. Drums, lutes, flutes and gandharva voices rang out. Then Kumara gave the elephant to Mahendra and mounted a heavenly chariot set with many jewels. He shone there, fanned with bright whisks, a white parasol of Varuna gleaming over his head like moonlight.
The two armies stood on the ground, each drawn up in its own formation, and bards praised both sides. Their roar was like a forest, terrible to the faint-hearted and a joy to the brave. Then, drunk on strength and blind with anger, gods and daityas fell on each other. The battle was thunderous. In a moment the field was covered with severed heads and trunks. Hundreds and thousands lay fallen. Some had lost arms to sword-strokes, some thighs, some were crushed by maces and clubs, some pierced through the heart. Headless bodies rose and danced, weapons still in hand. Rivers of blood ran. Ghosts and spirits gathered, jackals, vultures, hawks and crows feasting on the dead.
Taraka himself came on again with his great army, and the gods under Indra met him. Then began duels that shook gods and demons alike: brave men rejoiced, cowards trembled. Taraka fought Indra. Samhrada fought Agni, Yama fought Jambha, Varuna fought Bala, and Vayu met Suvira. Kubera fought Pavamana, Shambhu fought Ishana, Shumbha fought Shesha, Kumbha fought the moon, and Kumbara fought the sun. So the whole war became single combats, and neither side could be beaten. The earth grew grim with the fallen of both sides. Then Brahma told Narada what came next. In that bloody war Taraka struck Indra down with his spear. Indra fell senseless to the earth, and the other guardians of the world were beaten and fled, unable to bear Taraka's fire.
The asuras roared in victory. Then Virabhadra, born of Shiva's anger, came furious with his fierce attendants, put the gods behind him and faced Taraka. Pramathas and daityas fought with tridents, spears, nooses and axes. Virabhadra struck Taraka with his trident, and Taraka dropped senseless for a moment, then rose and struck back with his spear. They fought on, each wounding the other, to the sound of drums and horns, like the planets Mercury and Mars clashing in the sky. Narada went to Virabhadra and said, "Mighty one, leader of the attendants, turn back from this fight. I do not wish you to kill him." Virabhadra answered with folded hands, burning with anger: "Sage, watch my strength today. I will kill Taraka and leave the world without him."
He fought on, remembering Shiva, with his attendants riding bulls and carrying tridents. The asuras gave way and fled. Taraka, enraged, made ten thousand arms, mounted a lion, and cut down the gods and attendants. Virabhadra raised his trident, and the skies blazed with his light. But Shiva, watching, stopped him, and at his command Virabhadra withdrew. Taraka rained arrows on the gods. Then Hari took up the Sudarshana discus and his bow Sharnga, and fought him. Hari struck with his mace; Taraka split it in two with his trident. Hari loosed arrows; Taraka cut them down. Taraka's spear felled Hari, who rose, flung the discus, and struck Taraka down. Taraka rose and cut the discus, and Hari struck him with his sword Nandaka. Neither could overcome the other.
Brahma then spoke to Kumara: "Guha, son of Parvati, this fight between Vishnu and Taraka is pointless. I gave Taraka his boon, and I say truly that no one but you can kill him. You were born from Shankara for this. Protect the gods. You are no child, but the Lord of all." Kumara laughed, said "So be it," stepped down from his chariot and walked into battle, shining spear in hand. Taraka saw him and said to the gods, "How could you put a boy before me? Vishnu cheated Bali, and Indra wronged Gautama's wife." He turned to Virabhadra: "I will show you the fruit of the brahmins you killed at Daksha's sacrifice." He took up his spear, and Indra struck him with the thunderbolt, and he fell.
Taraka rose and with his spear struck Indra from his elephant to the ground, and the gods wailed. He trampled Indra, seized the thunderbolt, and beat him with it. Vishnu hurled his discus and struck Taraka, who fell, then rose and felled Vishnu with the spear. The gods cried out. Before Vishnu could rise, Virabhadra came and struck Taraka with his trident. Taraka fell, rose again, and pierced Virabhadra's chest with his spear. Virabhadra fell senseless; the gods, attendants, gandharvas, serpents and rakshasas cried out again and again. In a moment Virabhadra was up, lifting his trident, bright as lightning, blazing like the sun, moon and fire. He was about to kill the asura when Kumara stopped him.
