The story · English

Brahma said: Kumara, the destroyer of enemy heroes, held back Virabhadra. Then he turned his mind to killing Taraka, remembering the lotus feet of Shiva. The mighty Kartikeya roared, armed and angry, surrounded by his great army. All the gods and the Ganas cried out, "Victory, victory," and the sages praised him with words he loved. Then the battle between Taraka and Kumara began, and it was terrible, unbearable, a fear to every creature. Each hero held a spear. They fought like two lions, dodging and striking, spear against spear, while everyone watched in wonder. They cut at each other's heads, throats, thighs, knees, waists, chests and backs. Both were wounded and neither gave way.

The gods, Gandharvas and Kinnaras stood watching and asked one another who would win. Then a voice came from the sky to comfort the gods: "Kumara will kill the asura Taraka. Do not grieve. Rest easy. Shankara himself stands here for your sake in the form of a son." Hearing this, Kumara, surrounded by the Pramathas, rushed at the lord of the Daityas and struck him on the chest with his spear. Taraka ignored the blow and struck back in fury. Shiva's son fell senseless and woke after a moment, praised by the great sages. Like a lion mad with rage, he hit Taraka again. They fought on foot, in many shapes, and the watchers said nothing. The wind did not blow, the sun lost its light, and the whole earth shook, with its mountains and forests.

Then Himalaya and the other mountains came, tender with love, wanting to reach Kumara, and they were afraid. Seeing them, Parvati's son comforted them: "Do not be troubled, great ones. Do not worry. Today, before all of you, I will kill this sinner." He bowed to Girija and to Shambhu and took up his blazing spear. Shining with Shankara's power, he threw it. It struck Taraka, who had tormented the worlds. The lord of all the asuras fell to the ground with his body shattered and died where he lay, as everyone watched. Kumara did not strike the fallen body again. With their leader dead, the gods destroyed many asuras. Some stood with folded hands, thousands lay cut apart, and some begged Kumara, "Protect us." Others fled into Patala, beaten, and the whole army was broken.

The world was free of thorns, and Indra and the gods were glad. Shiva heard of Kartikeya's victory and came gladly with his Ganas and his beloved. He set his sun-bright son on his lap and caressed him, and Parvati was full of tenderness. Himalaya came with his sons and praised Shambhu, Parvati and Guha. The gods, sages, Siddhas and Caranas praised them too. Flowers fell in great showers, the Gandharva lords sang, the Apsarases danced, and cries of victory and homage rose again and again. Brahma and Vishnu, too, were pleased and praised Shiva, Parvati and Kumara. With Kumara in front, Vishnu, Indra and the others waved lamps before him. Then Rudra left with Bhavani for his own mountain, praised by all.

Brahma said: The mountain Kraunca came to Kumara, wounded by arrows, driven by the asura Bana. He bowed and said, "Kumara, Skanda, slayer of Taraka, protect me." Kumara hurled his spear, thinking of Shiva. It burned Bana and his army to ashes and returned to Guha's hand. "Go home without fear," said Kumara. Then he set up three lingas: Pratijnesvara, Kapalesvara and Kumaresvara, and Stambhesvara by the pillar of victory. The gods set up lingas too. Kumuda, son of Sesha, came next, harassed by the asura Pralamba. Kumara's spear burned Pralamba and his host, and he sent Kumuda home to Patala. This tale of Kumara's victory removes all sin and grants desires. Those who sing it go to Shiva's world, and those who hear it with faith attain liberation.
