Suta told how Narada, glad at what he had heard of Kartikeya, the enemy of Taraka, asked Brahma for more. He said: "Lord of creatures, I have heard the good deeds of Kartikeya, sweeter than nectar. Now I want to hear about Ganesha, his birth and his divine acts, which bring good fortune to all." Brahma, remembering Shiva, was pleased and answered. He said that Ganesha's birth is told differently in different ages. In one age his head was cut off after Sani looked at it, and an elephant's face was set on him. Now he would tell the birth from the Sveta age, where Shiva himself, the merciful, cut off the head. Brahma told Narada not to doubt it: Shiva makes all things, is without qualities and yet has them, and by his play creates, keeps and destroys the whole world.
After Shiva had married Parvati and gone to Kailasa, some time passed. Then Parvati sat with her two friends, Jaya and Vijaya, and they talked together. Jaya and Vijaya said: all the troops of Rudra, Nandi and Bhringi at their head, are countless, and all obey only Shiva's command. They stand at the door, yet none of them is truly ours. Our mind does not rest with them. You should make one who is ours alone. Parvati thought the advice good and decided to do it. Then one day, while she was bathing, Shiva came into the inner house, scolding Nandi as he came. Parvati rose, ashamed, because he had come at the wrong moment. She felt the force of her friends' words and found them wise.
Some time later the Goddess thought it through. She said to herself: "Let me have a servant of my own, able and good, who will not move a hair's breadth from my word." With that, she took the dirt from her own body and made a man from it. He had every mark of a good man, flawless in every limb, tall, handsome, and of great strength and courage. She gave him clothes, many ornaments, and her fullest blessing. She told him: "You are my son. You are mine, and I have no one else here." The man bowed to her and said, as Ganesha: "What is there to do? Tell me, and I will do it." Parvati answered him: "My child, listen. Be my doorkeeper today."
She went on: "Without my word, my son, let no one come into my house, whoever he is. What I say is true." Then she gave him a very strong stick. Seeing how handsome he was, she was glad. She kissed his face, embraced him with kindness, and set him at her door, stick in hand, as lord of the troops. The great hero stood there, wishing Parvati well. She went back to bathing with her friends. Just then Shiva came to the door, curious, a master of many plays. Ganesha did not know him. He said: "Without my mother's word you may not go in. She is bathing. Where are you going?" And he raised the stick to stop him.
Shiva looked at him and said: "Fool, whom are you forbidding? Do you not know me? I am Shiva." Ganesha struck him with the stick. Shiva, now angry, answered his own son: "You are a fool. I am Shiva, Girija's husband. I am going to my own home, boy. How can you stop me?" As Shiva went to enter, Ganesha grew angry too and struck him again with the staff. Then Shiva was truly furious. He called to his troops: "Look, who is this, and what is he doing?" And Shiva stood outside the house, angry, the lord who follows the ways of the world, and whose play is full of wonders.
