The story · English
Brahma tells the story. Shiva's attendants, angry, went to the door at Shiva's command and found the son of Girija standing guard there, staff in hand. They asked him, "Who are you? Where have you come from? What do you want here? Go far away from this place, if you wish to stay alive." The boy was not afraid. He answered, "Who are you, and where have you come from? You are handsome enough, but why are you standing here as enemies? Go away." The attendants laughed among themselves, great heroes whose pride was gone, and then turned back to him in anger. "We are Shiva's finest attendants. We have come at Shankara's command to keep you from this door. We will not strike you, thinking you one of us, but stand aside. Why ask for death?" The boy only rebuked them, and he did not give up the door.
The attendants went to Shiva and told him everything. The Lord, whose play is full of wonders, rebuked his own attendants. "Who is this, speaking like an enemy, so puffed up? What can a fool do? He plainly wants his own death. Drive this new doorkeeper far away. You stand there like cowards. Why do you bring me this report?" Sent back by their master, they returned and shouted, "You there, who are you, and who set you here? You do not even count us. How can you hope to live? A jackal who sits on a lion's throne thinks he can have Shiva. You roar, fool, only until you feel our strength." Furious, the boy took his stick in both hands and beat them. Then he said, "Go, go far away, or I will show you my terrible strength, and you will be laughed at."
The attendants asked one another what to do. They kept the rules of the house, they said, or else what would he say next? So they went to Shiva, who waited about a krosha from Kailasa. Shiva smiled, trident in hand, and spoke to those he counted heroes. "You think yourselves brave, but you are cowards. You are not fit to speak in front of me. Go, and strike down whoever it is who rules there. Why say more? Drive him off." Rebuked, they went back and said, "Listen, boy. Why do you talk so boldly? Go far away, or you will die." The boy grew sad, wondering what to do. Meanwhile the Goddess heard the quarrel at the door and sent her friend to look. The friend watched a moment, then went to Shiva's side and told Girija all of it.
The friend said, "Your attendant stands at the door, Maheshvari, and Shiva's heroes are rebuking him. Shiva and his attendants walk into your house without waiting for your leave, by force. That is not good for you. This boy did right, and let no one in. He has suffered scorn for it. Now there is only a quarrel of words. If they do not win that quarrel, let them never enter. Do not give up your honor, lady. Shiva is always like a monkey, and pride will not help him." Parvati paused a moment, and by Shiva's will she grew proud. She asked why force had been used, and said it would be done as she wished. She sent her friend to the boy. The friend told him, "You did well. They shall not enter by force. If you win, or lose, do what must be done."
Hearing his mother's words, the boy, Ganesha, was filled with joy and great strength. He tied his waistcloth and turban, slapped his thighs, and spoke gladly and without fear to all the attendants. "I am the son of Girija, and you are Shiva's attendants. We are equal. You are doorkeepers, and so am I. You stand where you stand, and I stand here. When you stand here, you must keep Shiva's command, and now I keep it truly. So hear me, Shiva's attendants. By force or by courtesy, you may not go into the house." Ashamed, the attendants went to Shiva, bowed, and told him all that had happened. Shiva, taking up the ways of the world, said, "War is not right. He is one of ours, and Gauri's attendant too. If I plead with him, the world will say Shambhu is ruled by a woman. Yet he is one boy. You are skilled in battle. Fight him."
Shiva fell silent, showing the ways of the world. The attendants, resolved, armed themselves and went to Shiva's house. Ganesha saw them and made ready. "Come, all you captains who keep Shiva's command. I am one boy, and I too keep it. Let Parvati see her son's strength, and let Shiva see his attendants'." They came with weapons, grinding their teeth, crying out, "Look, look." Nandi came first and seized one of the boy's feet. Bhringi ran and seized the other. But as they pulled, the boy struck them with his hands and threw them off. Then he took up a great iron club and struck them all down. Hands, backs, heads, knees and shoulders were broken. Those who came face to face were struck in the heart. Some fell, some fled, and some ran to Shiva. Thousands ran, as deer run from a lion.
Ganesha stood again at the door, as terrible as Time at the world's end. Then, sent by Narada, the gods came before Shiva, bowed, and said, "Give us your command. You are the supreme Brahman, maker and keeper and destroyer. What play have you made today? Tell us." Shiva saw his attendants broken, and told them all. Then he smiled and said to me, Brahma, "A boy stands at my door with a stick and keeps me from my house. He has beaten my attendants. You must go and calm him." I went with the sages, not knowing better. The mighty boy saw me, grew angry, and tore at my beard. I said, "Forgive me. I did not come to fight. I am a brahmin." But he lifted his club, and I ran. Those with me were struck, and some fled to Shiva. Shiva grew very angry.
Shiva ordered Indra and the gods, Shanmukha and the attendants, the ghosts and spirits, all to go and kill the boy. They went from every side with raised weapons, and every weapon was hurled at Ganesha. A great cry rose in the three worlds. People feared that Brahma's life had run out and the universe was ending before its time. But the weapons failed. The Goddess Jagadamba heard it all and grew furious. She made two powers. One was dark as a mountain, her mouth gaping wide. The other was like lightning, with many arms. They swallowed the weapons and threw them back, and one boy shook the whole host, as a mountain once churned the ocean. The earth and sea trembled and the gods fled. Only Shanmukha stayed. Shiva, in rage, went forth with Vishnu. Narada bowed and said, "You have broken their pride. Now, kind to your devotees, honor them." Then he vanished.
