Brahma said to Narada: Hearing what you had told him, Shiva, who is kind to his devotees, wanted to fight that boy. He called Vishnu, took counsel with him, and came against the boy with a great army and the gods beside him. The gods fought, remembering Shiva's lotus feet, strong and eager, as if Shiva's own glance rested on them. The boy, lord of the ganas, held only a staff, and the Goddess's power was in him. With it he struck down the best of the gods, and then Vishnu himself. The whole host of gods lost its strength and turned away, beaten by that staff.

Shiva fought a long time with his army. He looked at the boy, terrible to see, and was filled with wonder. Then he settled on a plan: this one could only be killed by a trick, in no other way. He stood in the middle of his army. When Vishnu came into the fight, the gods and Shiva's ganas rejoiced, and all of them gathered in friendship and made a festival. Then the Goddess's son honored Vishnu first. Vishnu said to Shiva, "I will bewilder him, and you must strike him. This dark-natured, hard-to-overcome one cannot be killed without a trick." Shiva agreed with him and gave the order. Vishnu, wearing Shiva's own power, set himself to deceive the boy.

Seeing Vishnu hidden in this way, the Goddess's two powers, one in the boy and one in Vishnu, were withdrawn, and the boy's strength was given back to him. Ganesha, stronger than before, hurled his iron club at the place where Vishnu stood, and Vishnu used some contrivance to turn its course aside. Then Shiva came, remembering his own Lord. He saw the boy's face, took up his trident, and came in great anger, wanting to fight. The boy saw Shiva coming with the trident in his hand and knew he meant to kill him. Remembering his mother's feet, he struck Shiva's hand with his power, and the trident fell. Shiva took up the bow Pinaka, and the boy brought that down too, with his club.

Shiva's five hands were struck, and with five he took up the trident again. He said, "This is a great sorrow now. What will become of my ganas?" Meanwhile the boy, filled with the Goddess's strength, swung his club among the gods and their hosts. They scattered in all ten directions, and no one stood in the battle before that astonishing fighter. Vishnu looked at him and said, "This one is blessed. Great in strength, a hero, fond of war. I have seen many gods, demons, yakshas, gandharvas and rakshasas, and none equals this lord of the ganas." The boy hurled his club at Vishnu, who caught up his discus and broke it. The boy threw the broken piece, and Garuda seized it. They fought on, Vishnu and the boy, a long while.

Then the boy, remembering Shiva, took a matchless staff and struck Vishnu with it. Vishnu could not bear the blow and fell to the ground, but quickly rose and fought again. In that moment Shiva, trident in hand, came from the north and cut off the boy's head. The ganas' army and the gods' army both stood utterly still. Narada, you went and told the Goddess everything, and said, "Proud one, listen. You must not give up your pride now." Then you vanished. The ganas beat drums and held a great festival. But as Shiva grieved, Parvati grew terribly angry. She cried, "Where shall I go? My son has been destroyed by all the gods and ganas. I will destroy them all, or bring about the end of the world." In her fury she made hundreds of thousands of powers, who bowed and asked what she commanded. She said, "Devour the gods, the sages, the yakshas, the rakshasas, ours and others, all of them."

The powers burned through the gods as fire burns through grass. Vishnu, Brahma, Shiva, Indra, Skanda, the sun, none was spared. Wherever one was seen, they seized him and put him in their mouths. The gods, the ganas and the sages gathered and feared for their lives. They said that only when Parvati was pleased would there be peace. Shiva himself, playing out his many games, acted as one grieving. Narada, you came then, and the sages went to her, bowed again and again, and praised her: "You are the first power, who makes, keeps and ends the worlds. Be gracious." She said nothing. They begged again, hands joined, and she softened. She said, "If my son lives, I will stop. Let him be honored among you, lord over all." Shiva told the gods to go north and bring the head of the first creature they met. They found a one-tusked elephant, set its head on the washed body, and sprinkled it with water charged with Vedic mantras. The boy rose as if from sleep, with an elephant's face, radiant. The gods rejoiced, and the Goddess, seeing her son alive, was filled with joy.
