The story · English

Narada asked Brahma what happened once the Goddess saw her son alive again. Brahma said he would tell it, because it was a great festival. The boy, the son of Shiva, had come back to life, calm now, though his face was changed. The gods and the chiefs of the hosts consecrated him as Ganesha, the elephant-faced. When the Goddess saw her son she was full of joy. She lifted him in both arms and held him close. She gave him clothes of many kinds and many ornaments. She worshipped him with many perfections, and touched him with her hand, the hand that takes away every sorrow. She kissed his face and gave him boons. She said, "You were born into grief. Now you are blessed and your work is done. From today you will be worshipped first, before all the gods, and you will never again be without joy."

She went on. "The vermilion now on your face is why men will always honor you with vermilion. They will worship you with flowers, sandal paste, sweet scent, fine food offerings, the waving of lamps, betel, gifts, circling walks and bows. Whoever worships you so will have every success, without doubt, and obstacles of every kind will fade away." Then Mahesvara also honored his son again with many fine things. By the Goddess's grace, in a single moment, health came back to the gods and above all to the hosts. At that same moment Indra and the other gods praised Shiva, won him over, and led him to the Goddess. They set the boy on his lap for the good of the three worlds. Shiva laid his lotus hand on the boy's head and said to the gods, "This is my second son."

Ganesha stood and bowed to Shiva, to Parvati, to Vishnu and to Brahma, and to Narada and the other sages. He spoke before them all. "Forgive my offense. Pride like this is common among men." Then Brahma, Shiva and Vishnu answered together, giving him the best of boons. "We three are worshipped everywhere. Let this lord of the hosts be worshipped by all in the same way. He removes obstacles and gives the fruit of every wish. Let people worship him first, and only then us. If he goes unworshipped and other gods are honored, the fruit of that worship is lost. Do not doubt it." Shiva worshipped him first, then Vishnu, then Brahma, Parvati and the gods. Shiva spoke warmly. "Son of the mountain king's daughter, I am pleased. When I am pleased, the world is pleased. You are small, yet very strong. Be happy always. Let your name be the greatest for destroying obstacles. Be worshipped as chief of all my hosts."

Shiva also gave this boon. "You were born on the fourth day of the dark half of Bhadra, at moonrise, in the first watch of the night. So keep your vow on that day each year, until the fourth comes round again." He told people to worship Ganesha on the fourth day, and in the month of Margasirsha to bathe at dawn and tell the brahmins of the vow. They should fast, worship with durva grass, and bathe again when night begins. The image may be of metal, coral, white arka wood or clay. The grass is a span long, with no root and no blemish, offered in a hundred and one, or twenty-one, blades. After incense, lamps and food offerings, they worship the young moon, feed the brahmins sweets, and eat sweet food without salt. At the year's end comes the closing rite: twelve brahmins fed, a jar set up, a fire offering, two women and two boys fed, a night of waking, and a farewell at dawn.

Shiva added that those who worship him with vermilion, sandal, rice and ketaka flowers will gain success, lose their obstacles and receive what they desire. Everyone may do it, women especially, and kings facing the sunrise. All the gods and sages said, "So be it," and the hosts bowed and worshipped him. Brahma said even four mouths could not tell Parvati's joy. Drums sounded, the apsarases danced, gandharvas sang, and flowers fell. The world grew well, and Shiva and Shiva rejoiced. Then the gods and sages left at Shiva's word. Parvati's anger was gone. Shiva took her back as before and brought joy to the worlds. Vishnu and Brahma took leave and went home. Brahma told Narada to do likewise. He said whoever hears this story with a steady mind receives all that he wants: a son, wealth, a wife, health, good fortune, freedom from sorrow. It is also good to hear before a journey.
