The story · English
Narada asked Brahma what happened after the birth of Ganesha, and Brahma told him. Shiva and Shiva took great joy in their two sons, Shanmukha and Ganesha. The boys played together, and they served their parents with deep devotion. The love their parents felt for them grew the way the moon grows in the bright half of the month. One day, alone together, the two parents began to think. Their sons had come of age. How should the marriages be arranged? Both sons were dear to them, and the question troubled them. The sons learned what their parents had in mind and wanted marriage themselves. Each began to say, again and again, "I will marry first." They argued with each other every day.
The parents, lords of all the worlds, heard this and were astonished, though they were acting in the way of the world. What should they do? How should they settle it? Then they thought of a clever plan. They called both sons to them and said, "We have made a rule, and it will be good for you both. Listen. You are equal, and we can find no difference between you. So we set a condition for you both. Whoever travels all the way around the earth and comes back here first will be married first." The mighty son born from the reeds, Shanmukha, heard this and left the house at once to circle the earth.
Ganesha stayed where he was. He was the wisest of the gods, and he turned the matter over in his mind. What should he do? Where could he go? He could not outrun his brother. If he walked a mere krosha and could not go on, how could he cross the whole earth? And what happiness would be left after such a journey? Having thought it through, he bathed properly and came back into the house. He said to his father and mother, "Please sit on these seats I have set out for you, and let me worship you. Fulfil this wish of mine." The two of them sat to receive his worship. He worshipped them and walked around them again and again, seven times, and bowed seven times. Then he stood with folded hands and praised them at length. His parents were overcome with love.
Ganesha said, "Mother, Father, hear my request. Let my wedding be held at once." They answered, "Go around the whole earth, forests and all. Your brother has already gone. You go too, and come back." Ganesha spoke back to them, and he was angry. "Mother, Father, you are wise and you are the very form of dharma. Hear me by dharma. I have already circled the earth seven times. How can you tell me to go again?" They played the part of ordinary people and asked, "When did you cross the earth, son? It is vast, with seven continents, bounded by oceans, and full of deep wilderness." Ganesha replied, "I worshipped you both, and by my own understanding I made the circuit of the earth to its ocean shores."
He went on. "Do the Vedas and the scriptures say this or not? One who worships his parents and walks around them wins the fruit of circling the earth. One who leaves his parents at home and goes to a holy place bears the sin of killing them. A son's greatest holy place is his parents' lotus feet. Other holy places are far away and reached only by travel. This one is near and easy. If you make this untrue, then even the Veda becomes untrue. So hold my wedding soon, or declare the Veda and scriptures false." He fell silent. His parents were amazed. They praised him warmly: "Your mind is pure. What you said is true. Whoever keeps his wits in trouble loses his sorrow as darkness goes when the sun is seen." They comforted him and decided to marry him.
Visvarupa, lord of creatures, was glad to hear of it. He had two lovely daughters, Siddhi and Buddhi. Shiva and Girija had Ganesha married to them in a great festival. All the gods came, and the sages and gods rejoiced. In time Siddhi bore a son named Kshema, and Buddhi bore a son named Labha. Then Shanmukha returned from circling the earth. Narada met him and told him how his parents had tricked him to send him away while Ganesha was married. Skanda, burning with anger, bowed to his father and went to Mount Kraunca, though his parents tried to stop him. "I will not stay here a moment," he said. He is there still, and the sight of him destroys the sins of all the worlds. From that day he has been known as Kumara, the one who stays unmarried. His mother Uma grieved and begged Shiva to go to him. Shiva went in part to the mountain and became the jyotirlinga called Mallikarjuna, where he is seen with Shiva to this day. Skanda moved three yojanas away. On the new-moon day Shiva visits him, and on the full-moon day Parvati does. Whoever hears this tale is freed from sin and gains what he wishes. Om namah Sivaya.
