Acting Without Stain

Bhagavad Gita 4.14

Meaning · English

Actions do not taint me, and I have no desire for the fruits of action. One who knows me in this way is never bound by the results of action.

Two words carry this. Karma is action, anything done. Phala is fruit, what ripens from it afterward. The text uses two pictures for how action clings. Limpanti means to smear or taint, the way oil marks cloth. Badhyate means to be tied, from a root for binding with rope. So Krishna says two things about himself: no deed smears him, and he wants nothing from the outcome. Then he draws the line to Arjuna. Whoever knows him this way is not tied by what he does. The reason sits in the order of the two claims. Action alone does not bind. The hold comes from wanting the fruit, from needing a particular result. Where that hunger is missing, the deed is done and nothing is left tied to it. Arjuna is about to act in the hardest way, and he fears the outcome. Krishna shows him that the knot lies in the craving, not the deed. For the listener, the verse asks for knowing, not escape from work. Shankara reads that knowing as seeing that the Self is not the doer. Ramanuja reads it as knowing the Lord's untainted acts, creation among them. Madhva reads it as knowing God as supreme and free of karma, and being released by his grace.

A window takes the whole day: rain runs down it, dust settles, a bird strikes and flies off. By evening the glass is still clear, because it never held on to any of it. The deed is the weather passing over, and the wanting is the film that would make it stick.

1. Pick one ordinary task today, such as washing dishes, answering a message or walking to the shop. 2. Before you start, say quietly what you hope to get from it: thanks, praise, a good result. 3. Do the task fully for ten minutes, with that hope set aside. 4. Afterward, notice whether your mind keeps checking for the reward, and how heavy or light the task felt compared with usual.

A shopkeeper opens the shutters on the morning the rent is due. Every customer who walks in is also a number against that deadline. He is short with a woman who only wants to look, and he watches the door more than the shelves. The verse changes the moment in steps. He still sells, counts stock and keeps the books. But he sees that the dread of the total is a separate thing from the task of serving the person in front of him. He gives the visitor his full attention, does the next small job well, and lets the day's sum arrive when it arrives. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: a mind fixed on the result does the present work worse. The verse does not promise the rent will be paid. It does not remove the worry or the loss if sales fall short. It is a teaching about how the work is held, and it does not replace advice from an accountant or a lender when money is truly short.
