Maker Who Stays Still
Bhagavad Gita 4.13
Meaning · English
The fourfold order of human callings I brought forth, divided by quality and by work. Though I am its maker, know me as one who does nothing and who never changes.
Three words carry the verse. Guna means a quality, a strand of temperament in a person. Karma means action, the work a person does. Akartaram means non-doer, one who is not the doer. Krishna tells Arjuna that he made the four-fold order of human callings, and that he made it by dividing people according to guna and karma, quality and activity. Birth is not the basis he names. Then he turns at once to himself: though he is the maker of all this, Arjuna should know him as a non-doer, and as avyayam, unchanging. The reason sits in the next lines. Krishna has just spoken of people who work for results. He wants Arjuna to see that making and doing can come apart in him: the world is arranged through him, yet no act clings to him or alters him. Arjuna is asked to hold both facts about Krishna together. Shankara reads the non-doing as true of the Self itself, so that the creating belongs to the Lord's power of appearance and leaves him unmoved. Ramanuja reads it as saying the Lord is the maker of the whole order and still stays unchanged and free of fault. Madhva reads the Lord as the one independent author of the order, untouched by the bondage that action brings others.
A lamp stands in the middle of a house at night. One person reads by it, another chops onions, another sews a hem. The lamp makes every one of those tasks possible and does none of them. It burns the same whatever is done in its light. The lamp is Krishna, the tasks are the callings of people, and his light is the ordering that lets each get on with their own work.
1. Tonight, pick three people you depend on, such as a cook, a driver or a neighbour, and name one quality each brings that you lack. 2. Tomorrow, when you hand a task to someone, choose by what they are good at, not by what is convenient for you. 3. Afterward, notice whether you can set a job going and then leave it alone. Write one line on how that felt.
A head cook at a wedding kitchen stands in the dark before dawn. A nephew with steady hands cuts vegetables, an aunt who never hurries watches the rice, a quick talker deals with the caterer's van. She herself lifts no pot for the next hour, yet the whole kitchen runs by how she placed people. Krishna's verse speaks to this moment in two steps. First, the arrangement comes from reading each person's quality and work, and she did that the night before. Second, her calm now comes from not needing to be the hand in every pot. She can stand at the door and watch. Ordinary experience bears out that people differ in temperament and do better in work that fits them. The verse does not say she will never be tired or that the rice will not burn. It does not remove worry about the guests. It names a maker who arranges and stays unchanged, as Krishna's own condition, and says nothing about how a cook should feel.
