Quick Fruit of Work

Bhagavad Gita 4.12

Meaning · English

Wanting success from their actions, people in this world worship the celestial gods. For in human society, the success that is born of action comes quickly.

Three words carry it. Karma is action, anything done with intent. Siddhi is success, a thing accomplished or ripened. Devatas are the celestial gods, the powers people turn to when they want something. Krishna tells Arjuna that those who desire success from their activities worship these gods, and that in the human world the result of action arrives fast. The word for result here is karma-ja, born of action. So the text says the fruit comes from the doing, and it comes soon. This answers a question left open by the verses before it. If Krishna meets everyone as they approach him, why do so many people turn to lesser powers? Krishna's answer is that most people want visible results, and results of action are the nearest thing on offer. Shankara reads the verse as saying that few seek liberation, because the fruit of action is quick while the fruit of knowledge is rare. Ramanuja holds that the gods are not independent of the Lord. Madhva also places them beneath him. Nothing in the verse tells Arjuna to stop acting. It describes what draws people, and it prepares the way for the next verses.

A farmer sows radishes and spinach beside a mango sapling. The greens are on the table within weeks, so every neighbour plants greens. The mango asks years of him. Worship for results is the quick garden bed, and the slower thing Krishna points toward is the tree.

1. Pick one small task today where you are hoping for a result, such as a message, a meal, or a form. 2. Before you start, say to yourself what you are asking for, in one plain sentence. 3. Do the work fully for ten minutes, then notice how soon something visibly changed. 4. In the evening, note whether your wish was for the result itself or for what you imagined it would give you.

A young woman ties a thread at the shrine the night before a job interview. She promises sweets if she is chosen. She is frightened, and the promise gives her something to hold. Krishna's teaching gently widens the picture. She wants success from action, and he says the result of action comes quickly in human society. So the preparation counts alongside the offering. She can rehearse her answers, iron her clothes and sleep. Each is an action, and each bears fruit soon in how steadily she walks in. The vow can stay as her prayer, and she can see that the work is also her worship. Ordinary experience agrees that a prepared person is calmer than an unprepared one. The verse does not promise she gets the job. It says action bears fruit, and it does not say which fruit or when it ripens. It does not remove her fear, and it offers no substitute for real help if the anxiety grows past ordinary nerves.
