Met As You Come

Bhagavad Gita 4.11

Meaning · English

In whatever way people surrender to me, in just that way I respond to them. Arjun, son of Pritha, men follow my path in every respect.

Three words carry this. Prapadyante comes from a root meaning to step toward, to fall at someone's feet. It is surrender, a coming with the whole self, not a casual visit. Bhajami comes from a root meaning to share, to partake, to serve. Krishna uses it for his own answer, so it means he gives back, he meets the person. Vartma is a path, literally the track a wheel leaves in the ground. Krishna tells Arjuna that however a person comes to him, he answers in the same manner. He then adds that men follow his track in every respect: whatever road they walk, they are walking on his ground. Krishna says this right after speaking of many who, freed from fear and anger, reached him, and right before speaking of those who seek results. Arjuna is hearing that the one speaking to him is neither distant nor arbitrary. The answer is fitted to the approach. So Krishna draws Arjuna's attention to how a person comes: with what longing, and how completely. Shankara reads it as Krishna giving each seeker what they seek, fruit to those wanting fruit and liberation to those wanting liberation, without favoritism. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord's gracious nature, making himself reachable and giving himself to those who seek him. Madhva reads it as a reward graded to the kind and measure of each person's devotion.

At a village well, people hold out whatever they carry: a cup, a pot, a bucket. The water refuses none of them, and each vessel fills to its own size. Krishna's answer works the same way. He meets each person according to how they come, and the shape of the approach sets the shape of what returns.

1. Pick one time today when you usually pray, sit quietly, or simply pause. Two minutes is enough. 2. Before you begin, notice how you are arriving: hurried, bargaining, distracted, or open. Name it in one word. 3. Put your phone in another room and give the whole two minutes to it. 4. In the evening, recall what answered you, if anything: a calm, a thought, a restlessness. Notice it without judging it.

A man stands outside his brother's door with a box of sweets, hand raised to knock. They have not spoken in two years. He has been rehearsing. He could arrive with folded arms, ready for a fight, or with an open face and an open hand. Krishna teaches Arjuna that he answers a person in the same way that person comes to him. In that doorway, the lesson narrows to one thing: the manner of arriving is the part that belongs to the man himself. He cannot choose what his brother says. He can choose whether he comes guarded, bargaining or wholehearted. Ordinary experience agrees that people tend to answer tone with tone, and that a hurried, half-present visit gets a half-present reply. The teaching does not promise that the door will open, that the brother will soften, or that the old hurt will leave. It speaks of how Krishna meets those who turn toward him, not of how every person will respond.
