Fire That Purifies

Bhagavad Gita 4.10

Meaning · English

Freed from attachment, fear and anger, absorbed in me and taking refuge in me, many have been purified by the fire of knowledge and have come to my own divine love.

Three words carry the verse. Raga is attachment, from a root for colour or dye: a clinging that stains whatever it touches. Tapas is heat, here the heat of knowledge, which burns away what is false the way fire burns dross from metal. Mat-bhava is my state, or my own love. Krishna tells Arjuna that many people have already walked this road. They let go of attachment, fear and anger. They rested their whole mind in him and took refuge there. Knowledge then cleaned them, and they reached his love. The reason he gives is the pattern: he is describing a path others have finished, which tells Arjuna it can be done. He also names the three things that cloud the mind: wanting, dread and rage. The asking is gentle. Turn toward him, hold on less, and let knowing do the cleaning. Shankara reads the knowledge as itself the austerity that frees a person. Ramanuja reads it as knowledge of the Lord joined with loving devotion. Madhva stresses that the state is reached by knowing the Lord's greatness and through his grace.

A pot of cloudy lentils or a dirty pan goes onto a hot flame, and the burnt-on grime lifts away until the metal shines. Attachment, fear and anger are the grime. Knowledge held steadily, with the mind resting on Krishna, is the heat that clears it.

1. Tonight, take two minutes and name the one thing you are clinging to, the one you dread, and the one you are angry at. Say them aloud or write them down. 2. Tomorrow, when one of them stirs, stop for three slow breaths before you act. 3. In those breaths, silently say Krishna's name, or whatever name of God you hold dear, and let it be the place your mind rests. 4. At day's end, note whether the grip loosened even a little.

A man sits in a hospital corridor while his mother's test results are being read. His mind runs three ways at once: holding on to her, dreading the news, and anger at the doctor who is late. Krishna's verse would change the moment in steps. First he sees which of the three is speaking, since naming them already loosens them. Then he gives his mind a place to rest other than the worst outcome, and the verse says that place is Krishna. Then he lets what he knows, that every life has its limit and that he has loved well, steady the heat. Ordinary experience agrees that a mind named and settled chooses words more kindly than one in a panic. The verse does not promise that the results will be good. It does not remove grief, and it does not replace the doctor's work or the care his mother needs.
