Knowing Him Truly

Bhagavad Gita 4.9

Meaning · English

Whoever knows in truth that my birth and my activities are divine, having abandoned the body, is not born again. That person comes to me, Arjun.

Three words carry the verse. Janma is birth, karma is activity, and tattvatah is 'in truth', meaning as the thing really is and not as hearsay. Krishna says his birth and his actions are divine. He does not mean they are the ordinary kind, driven by past deeds and wants. He asks Arjuna to know them that way, in truth. Such a knower, when the body is dropped, is not born again and comes to Krishna. The reason follows from the verses before it. Krishna has just said he appears age after age to protect the good and restore order. If his coming is that purposeful, then it is no accident. Seeing it plainly is a kind of knowing that loosens the knower's own grip on ordinary birth and wanting. The verse answers a quiet worry of Arjuna's, which is what any of this has to do with him. The commentators read the knowing differently. Shankara takes the birth to come through Krishna's own power of appearance, not through bondage, and sees knowledge of this as freeing. Ramanuja takes the birth and acts as real and wholly pure, and reads the knowing as loving devotion that reaches Krishna. Madhva also holds that they are real and divine, and reads release as given through Krishna's grace. All three agree that the knowing must be true and not borrowed.

You hear a rumor that a neighbor is cold and aloof. Then you watch him carry water to an old woman every dawn for years. After that you know him by what he actually does. Krishna asks for that second kind of knowing: his birth and acts seen as they are, not as hearsay.

1. Choose one person you only know by reputation, a relative or coworker, and today watch one thing they actually do. 2. Write one sentence about what that act shows, in your own words, without adding what you were told about them. 3. Tonight, spend two minutes asking whether any belief of yours is hearsay you have never checked. 4. Notice how a first-hand look feels different from a repeated opinion.

A woman sits beside her father's hospital bed at three in the morning. The monitor ticks, the corridor is quiet, and she is afraid of what comes next for him. She has heard many opinions about death from relatives and none has helped. Krishna's words give her something narrower to hold. He says that whoever knows his birth and work in truth, and not by repetition, leaves the body and is not born again. She can start from that one claim and not from every opinion she has heard. She can put the rumors down and sit with a single line she has actually read. Then she can recall one real thing her father did, a morning he drove her to school or a meal he cooked, and let her attention rest there. Ordinary experience bears out that attention steadies when it rests on one real thing. The verse does not take away her grief or change what the doctors say, and it does not replace the care her father needs from them.
