Protect, Remove, Restore

Bhagavad Gita 4.8

Meaning · English

To protect the righteous, to destroy the wicked, and to reestablish the eternal religion, I appear, age after age.

Krishna names three tasks and one promise. The tasks are protecting, destroying and reestablishing. The promise is that he keeps appearing. Three words carry the weight. Sadhu means a righteous, upright person, someone whose life leans toward the good. Duskrita means one who does wrong, literally a doer of bad deeds. The text defines the wicked by what they do, not by what they are born as. Dharma is the order that holds a life and a world together: right conduct, the way things hold when they are held well. Sambhavami, I appear, comes from the same word as the earlier verses, and yuge yuge means age after age, so this is a repeated pattern and not a single event. Krishna gives Arjuna the reason. The good need shelter, harm needs an end, and a broken order needs to be set up again. Shankara reads the appearing as the Lord taking a body through his own power to uphold dharma. Ramanuja stresses that the protection of devotees comes first. Madhva holds that the Lord's forms are real and not appearances. For Arjuna, standing between two armies, this means the struggle between right and wrong is taken seriously, and he is not asked to bear the whole of it alone.

A gardener walks the same bed every season. She props up the young seedlings against the wind, pulls the choking weeds, and re-stakes the rows after the rains have flattened them. The work never finishes, and she keeps coming back. Protecting the good, removing the harmful and restoring order is the Lord's repeated visit to the garden of the world.

1. Tonight, recall one person who was kind or honest this week, and write down one sentence about what they did. 2. Tomorrow, find one small way to shelter that goodness: thank them, back them up in a conversation, or simply do not mock it. 3. This week, name one small wrong you have been letting pass. Decide on one calm, specific action, such as a word to the person or a report to the right place.

A retired railway clerk sits at a housing society meeting. He has noticed that the water-fund accounts do not add up. Nobody else has said anything. He tells himself it is not his job and that someone more important will deal with it. Krishna's promise to protect the good, remove wrong and restore order shows what that moment is actually about. The three tasks are separate. The clerk can first stand beside the one neighbour who has already asked a question, which is protection. He can then put the figures on paper plainly, without anger, which is naming the wrong. After that he can ask for the accounts to be set right, which is restoration. The text teaches that the world's balance is held by a power greater than any one person, so he need not carry it all alone or wait for rescue. Ordinary experience confirms that small wrongs grow when everyone stays quiet. The verse does not promise that the accounts will be fixed, that the neighbours will thank him, or that the outcome will be fair.
