Whenever Righteousness Declines
Bhagavad Gita 4.7
Meaning · English
Whenever righteousness declines, Arjun, descendant of Bharat, and unrighteousness increases, at that time I send forth myself.
Three words carry it. Dharma comes from a root meaning to hold up. It is whatever keeps a family, a village or a life from falling apart. Glani means wilting, like a plant left without water, so decline here is a slow tiredness, not a sudden crash. Adharma is simply dharma's opposite, and its rising is named as a rise. Krishna does not say it happens once. He says whenever, twice over, so it is a pattern that returns. The plain sense is that when what holds the world up grows weak and the opposite grows strong, Krishna sends himself forth. The sending is his own act. Nothing forces it. The reason sits in the verses around it. Arjuna has just heard that Krishna is unborn and lord of all beings, and he needs to understand why such a one would take a body at all. The answer is that the world is not left alone to wilt. For Arjuna, standing between two armies, it means his moment is not a private crisis. Shankara reads the coming as real purpose worked through maya, a seeming birth of the unborn. Ramanuja reads it as the Lord taking a form of his own choosing, out of compassion for those who suffer. Madhva reads the forms as fully real, not appearances.
A child cries out in the night, and a parent who was asleep a moment ago is already in the doorway. Nobody called by name. The need itself brought them. In the same way, the text says, the slow failing of what holds the world up draws Krishna in.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, think of one small thing around you that is slipping: a promise left unkept, a shared room left untidy, a call you have put off. 2. Choose the smallest act that would hold it up again, and do it before you sleep, such as returning a borrowed item or sending one kind message. 3. Tomorrow morning, notice whether the thing feels lighter, and what it cost you to do it.
A pharmacist is locking up when a tired man asks for a strong medicine without the prescription. Everyone down the street bends this rule, and her feet ache. In that moment the pull is to call it normal. The verse names such a slackening as decline and does not call it normal. That changes the first step: she sees the request as a moment that asks something of her, not as a nuisance. Next she can refuse plainly and kindly, and offer to ring a doctor for him. Last, she can notice that the rule, small as it is, is part of what holds the street up. Ordinary experience confirms that tiredness weakens restraint, so seeing the moment clearly matters most at the end of a long day. The verse does not promise that the man leaves content, that her shop does not lose his custom, or that her tired feet will stop hurting. It gives her a way to read the moment, and it does not replace a doctor for his illness.
