Examine, then eat

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 28.41

Meaning · English

Do not take foods out of craving, nor out of not knowing. Examine first, then eat what is wholesome, for the body is born of food.

Charaka names two ways a meal goes wrong. The first is raga, craving, the pull of liking. A person knows a food does not suit them and eats it anyway because it tastes good. The second is avijnana, not knowing. A person eats something unsuitable in good faith, believing it is fine. Chakrapani reads the line exactly this way and notes that both are ruled out. The remedy is pariksha, examination: looking at a food and thinking about it before it is eaten. Then comes the choice of what is hita, wholesome, meaning what actually helps this body now. Charaka gives his own reason: the body is born of food. What is eaten today becomes the body of the weeks ahead. So the teaching asks for a small pause between appetite and the plate. It does not ban pleasure, and it gives no list of forbidden foods. It asks for a habit of honest questioning, and for enough learning to answer the question well.

1. Before your next meal, rest your hands for three slow breaths with the plate in front of you. Ask yourself whether you chose this because it suits you, or because you wanted it. 2. Pick one food you eat often without thinking. Today, notice how you feel an hour after eating it. 3. If a craving pulls at you between meals, wait five minutes before you decide. 4. Tonight, recall the day's meals and name one that you chose well.

Today's psychology knows the gap between knowing and doing well. People often eat foods they know do not suit them, pulled by taste, stress, habit or what happens to be nearby. Many others eat poorly in good faith because of confusing advice. Charaka's two causes, craving and not knowing, match this closely. A short pause before eating, often called mindful eating, is a recognised way to notice hunger and choose more deliberately. The reason he gives also holds in general terms: the body constantly rebuilds its tissues from what is eaten. The old idea of 'wholesome' is judged by Ayurveda's own measures, while modern nutrition judges by nutrients and a person's health. Constant scrutiny of food can also turn into anxiety, so anyone ill or with a troubled history around eating should decide with a doctor.
