Body and illness, one source

Charaka Samhita, Sutrasthana 28.45

Meaning · English

The body is born of food, and diseases too are born of food; then the distinctions of wholesome and unwholesome, and the difference between ease and suffering.

Atreya gathers the whole chapter into one line. The body is made from food: every tissue was once a meal. Chakrapani reads the word for 'thing' here as the body itself. Illness also comes from food. One source, two outcomes. What decides which? Hita and ahita, the wholesome and the unwholesome. In this system's terms, hita is food that suits this person, in this amount, at this time. Ahita is food that does not. The verse also names a second difference, between sukha, ease and comfort in body and mind, and duhkha, pain and suffering. The chapter as a whole draws the link: the body and its disorders are built from the same plate, so the plate is where comfort or suffering begins. Ayurveda explains elsewhere that agni, the digestive fire, turns fitting meals into healthy tissue and leaves heaviness after unfitting ones. Charaka's rules for eating, also given elsewhere, add that the right measure, a settled place and attention at meals are not table manners. They are the daily choice between the two outcomes.

A builder's lorry arrives at a house every morning. Some days it brings sound bricks, some days cracked ones, and the wall goes up either way. Years later the wall is simply the sum of those deliveries. The body works like that wall, meal by meal: what is brought in becomes what stands, sound or weak.

Physiology agrees with the first half plainly. The body is continually rebuilding itself, and the raw material for blood, muscle and bone comes from what we eat and drink. Mainstream medicine also counts long-term eating patterns among the main shapers of health, and accepts that the right food differs between people: allergies, intolerances, age and illness all change what suits someone. Where it disagrees is breadth. Many diseases arise from infection, inherited genes, injury, environment or chance, with food playing little or no part. The classical idea of agni maps loosely onto digestion and appetite, but there is no modern single fire to match it. Someone who is ill should not treat diet as the whole explanation or the whole remedy, and should not blame themselves for an illness they could not have avoided.
