Samyama on Change
Yoga Sutras 3.16

Meaning · English
Holding the mind in one unbroken focus on the three changes a thing goes through brings knowledge of what has passed and what is not yet come.
Four words carry this sutra. Parinama is change: a thing turning from one form into another. Traya means three, so there are three kinds of change to look at. Samyama is the three deepest steps of inner discipline, held together on a single object: steady attention, unbroken flow of attention, and complete absorption in the object. Atita and anagata are the gone-by and the not-yet-come, the past and the future. Jnana is knowledge. The plain sense is this. Patanjali teaches that when samyama rests on the changes a thing undergoes, the mind knows what that thing has been and what it will become. Nothing is guessed. The knowledge comes from staying with the change itself. Why say it? This chapter lists what samyama gives, one object at a time. Change is a natural first object, because everything seen is moving from one state to another, and the sutras before this one have already described that movement. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, takes the three changes to be those of a thing's form, its time, and its state, as set out earlier in the chapter. Samyama on them reveals its past and future. The later commentators, as far as I know, follow him on the main point.
A tree stump shows rings. Each ring is a year already lived, thick after a wet season, thin after a dry one. Someone who has looked at the rings long enough can read the past in the wood and say how the tree would have kept growing. The sutra pictures the same thing: close, patient looking at a thing's changes shows where it has been and where it is heading.
1. Today, choose one ordinary object that is visibly changing, such as a piece of fruit, a candle, or a plant on a windowsill. 2. Sit with it for three minutes. Look only at it, and notice its colour, firmness and shape as they are now. 3. Quietly notice the signs of what it was a few days ago and the signs of what it is turning into. 4. Look again tomorrow at the same hour, and notice what changed. Do not try to predict anything. Only look.
