Untangling Word and Meaning

Yoga Sutras 3.17

Meaning · English

Word, object and idea are mixed together, because each is laid over the others. Perfect concentration on the separation between them gives knowledge of the sounds made by all beings.

Three terms carry this sutra. Shabda is the word, the bare sound. Artha is the object the word points to. Pratyaya is the idea that rises in the mind when the word is heard. Adhyasa is the habit of laying one thing over another, as when a rope is taken for a snake. Samyama is holding attention on one thing until it stands clear. The sutra says that in ordinary hearing these three arrive as one lump. Hear the word, and the object and the idea come with it, so fast that nothing is noticed as separate. The sound is one thing, the object another, the idea a third. When samyama is held on the gaps between them, Patanjali says, knowledge of the cries of all beings follows. Why he says it: the chapter is working through what samyama gives when it rests on different objects, and here the object is the way meaning is built. The problem it answers is the blur itself. It rests on the earlier teaching that the mind adds its own coloring to what it meets. Vyasa, the oldest commentator, reads the sutra as saying that the yogi who sees these three apart understands the meaning in the speech of any creature. Later commentators follow his reading in the main.

A traveler on a train hears two strangers talking in a language she has never learned. She hears only sound, with no object or idea fixed to it. The sutra asks for that same clean hearing, held on purpose, even toward words she knows well.

1. Today, while someone speaks to you, spend one minute listening only to the sound: its pitch, its speed, its pauses. 2. Pick a plain word such as water. Say it slowly ten times. Notice when it turns into a bare sound, and what picture the mind supplies. 3. Sit for two minutes near a bird, a dog or a cat. Notice the sound, then separately notice what meaning you at once assume. Do not try to understand it. Only notice the two apart.
