Knowing Earlier Births

Yoga Sutras 3.18

Meaning · English

When the stored impressions are brought into direct view, knowledge of earlier births arises.

Three terms carry the sutra. Samskara is an impression left in the mind by what was done, felt or lived. Sakshatkarana is direct seeing, perceiving a thing face to face and not by inference or hearsay. Purva-jati is earlier birth, the lives before this one. The plain sense: the mind holds deposits from past experience, and they ordinarily work unseen. When they are perceived directly, the birth that left them becomes known. The sutra states no other path to this knowledge, only the seeing itself. Patanjali says this because the sutras before it have been showing what samyama, the combined holding of attention, gives when turned on one object. Here the object is the mind's own deposits. This follows from the sutra on past and future: if the past is stored as impressions, then seeing them is how the past is read. Vyasa's Bhashya, the oldest commentary, takes it this way. Impressions are of two kinds, those behind memory and the afflictions, and those behind merit and demerit. By samyama on them one sees them directly and so knows one's own earlier births. On this reading the commentators largely agree.

After rain, a farm track hardens with deep ruts. Nobody watched the carts go by, yet the grooves show their weight and direction. The impressions are the grooves. Seeing them plainly is reading the track back to what made it.

1. Tonight, sit for five minutes and recall one reaction of yours that comes faster than thought, such as a flash of irritation or a pull toward food. 2. Ask only where it might have been learned. Write one line about it. 3. Over the week, notice when the same reaction returns. Do not try to recall any earlier life; only notice that a groove is there.
