Reading Another's Mind
Yoga Sutras 3.19
Meaning · English
Through samyama on the mental image, one knows the mind of another.
Two key words carry the sutra. Pratyaya is the content of the mind at a given moment: what has been presented to it, a thought or an image. Citta is the mind-field. Para-citta is the mind-field of another. Jnana is knowing. So the sutra reads: when samyama, the three-fold holding of attention taught earlier in this chapter, is directed on a pratyaya, there is knowing of another person's mind. Patanjali's logic is plain. Samyama gives direct knowledge of whatever it is held on. Here the thing held is the image or thought present in a mind, and what comes of it is knowledge of that mind. Every word is accounted for: the object (the mental image), the practice (samyama, implied from the chapter), the result (knowing another's citta). Patanjali says this because the chapter is showing that samyama reaches any object, including the inner life of someone else. Vyasa's Bhashya takes the pratyaya to be the other person's mental image, and says the knowing arrives through it as it appears to the yogi. The commentators differ on whether the image is the other's or one's own; the plain reading follows Vyasa.
A person stands at a window at night and sees a lit lamp in the room across the street. They cannot see the other room's whole life, only what the lamp shows. The lamp is the mental image, and the lit room is the other mind, known through that one visible sign.
1. Once today, in a conversation, listen without preparing your reply. Just notice the thought or picture behind what the person says. 2. Afterward, spend a minute noting what you actually saw and heard, and what you only guessed. 3. Leave the guess unproven. The sutra asks for noticing the line between the two, not for reading minds.
