Tracing Vital Energy

Prashna Upanishad 3.12

Meaning · English

Whoever understands how life force begins, enters, settles, spreads into five parts, and exists within the self, reaches a state that never dies.

To be free from death, one must map the entire journey of the life force. This includes where it comes from, how it enters the body, its home base, and how it splits into five functional currents. Finally, one must recognize its inner nature. Understanding these specific mechanics of the breath transforms a person's relationship with existence, moving them from a temporary state to one that is lasting.

A map of a city's water system shows the reservoir, the main pipes, the pumping stations, and the individual taps in every home. Knowing the whole system prevents panic during a leak. Mapping the life force works the same way, showing how energy flows from its source to every limb.
