Everything, Yet What Then

Guru Ashtakam 1

Meaning · English

Handsome body, lovely wife, bright fame, wealth like Mount Meru. If the mind is not set on the Guru's lotus feet, what then, what then, what then, what then?

Picture a life with everything people chase: good looks, a beautiful wife, a name that is praised and talked about, money piled as high as Mount Meru, the great mountain of the old stories. The hymn grants all of it, then asks one question. If the mind is not fastened to the Guru's feet, what has any of it come to? Fastened is the right sense: stuck there, clinging, not just visiting. Nothing on the list is called bad. Each is weighed against that one missing thing.

Write a long row of zeros: a zero for looks, one for a wife, one for fame, a whole line for money. They look like a large number, but without a 1 written in front they add up to nothing. The missing 1 is a mind held at the Guru's feet.
