Meaning · English
Wife, wealth, sons, grandsons, house, relatives: all of it has come. If the mind is not fixed at the guru's lotus feet, what then, what then, what then, what then?
Picture a life that has filled up the way people hope: a wife, money, sons and then grandsons, a house, relatives close by. The verse grants all of it as already arrived. Then it asks one thing. Is the mind fixed at the guru's feet? 'Fixed' is closer to clinging, the way something settles and stays put. If the mind has not settled there, the question comes four times: then what? Each asking leaves less to say in reply.
Picture a handful of beads on a table, each one polished. With no thread through them, you cannot lift them as a necklace. Pick them up and they roll away. Wife, wealth, children, house and kin are the beads. The mind settled at the guru's feet is the thread. Without it, the hymn asks what they add up to.
