Meaning · English
Vedas and their six limbs on the lips, scripture mastered, fine prose and verse composed: if the mind is not fixed on the guru's lotus feet, then what?
Someone may know the Vedas by heart, along with the six supporting studies that teach how to sound, scan and read them. They know the scriptures well. They have the gift of poetry, and both their prose and their verse come out polished. Every skill of the learned mind is in place. Then the same question returns. If the mind has not settled at the guru's feet, what has all that learning done? The four-fold 'then what' asks it again and again and never answers.
A road map drawn with great care: every highway labeled, every river traced, the scale exact. It sits folded in a kitchen drawer, and its owner never leaves the house. The scholar's learning is like that map. It can describe every road, but if the mind never turns toward the guru's feet, the journey never starts.
