Respect, Fortune, Upright Living
Guru Ashtakam 4
Meaning · English
Honored abroad, fortunate at home, unmatched in good conduct, yet if the mind does not rest at the guru's lotus feet, what then, what then, what then, what then?
Three kinds of standing are listed. Strangers in other lands treat the speaker with respect. People back home count him lucky. And in good conduct, the way he keeps his habits and duties, he claims no one is ahead of him. That last one matters: even being a decent, upright person is placed on the same pile as fame. The refrain asks one thing. If the mind has not settled at the guru's feet and stayed there, what has any of this actually given?
A kite can have the brightest paper, the longest tail, and a crowd on the beach admiring it. If the string is not tied to a hand, the first gust carries it off. Honor abroad, luck at home and a clean record are the paper and tail; the mind fastened at the guru's feet is the knot that holds it.
